Okay, here's the challenge. I'm thinking of something, and the category is "captive-reef life-form." You can only ask YES/NO-questions, but you can ask as many as you like. However, you are only allowed one final guess and your guess must take the form of a photo along with the name. Without the proper photo, the guess is void, and additional guesses will be ignored even if correct.

The first part of this game will end upon the first correct guess, with +2 points going to the winner. The second part of the game is an attempt to steal. The first person, within 72 hours of the declared win, to post a link to a commercial website with the same photo, and I mean the same photo (digital edits not withstanding), as presented by the winner, will successfully steal +1 points from the winner.

Obviously, there is an advantage to taking your own photo or finding one that is unique. Any mismatch of photo and name will result in -1 points for the disinformation.

Once complete, this riddle will be replaced by another and scores will be a running tally. Names and scores will be kept in a public Google Docs file and a link will be provided. To ensure fairness I will PM the correct answer to Waterkeeper at the start.

Sorry Waterkeep, you're not eligible. ;)

I'm going to try and keep this first one fairly simple. If for no other reason, because I'm no expert on marine life forms and want to be able to answer the questions. For subsequent games I would like someone who knows a great deal about a particular creature to offer their knowledge for the next riddle.

Sound good? Okay, once again, the category is "captive-reef life-form", only YES/NO-questions, and your answer must take the form of a photo along with the specific (though not necessarily scientific) name.

Lets start! :)

Just one? I'd need a few so they can do their thing and populate my stomatella-less tank.

WaterKeeper
01/14/2009, 01:23 PM
Most times you don't even know you have any until they multiply, and multiply they do with a passion. Often they are not purposely added but are hitchhikers on the LR or LS. Many people seeing one for the first time think they are slugs as their shell only covers a small portion of their body. I think in that article by Ron he tells you that they escape predators by breaking off their rear end and leaving it behind. The price they pay for not having a shell in which to hide.

They are the string bikini wearers of snaildom. :eek1:

Lilfishbigreef, do you wish to be the next riddler? If so, say so now.

Whys
01/14/2009, 03:53 PM
I'm realizing a couple things.

One, there is a disadvantage to being the riddler as you can not score points will riddling. If no one objects, I move that riddlers receive +1 points for riddling. This would place me at +1 and sugar at +2 and an automatice +1 to lilfishbigreef if he riddles. Is everyone okay with this adjustment?

Also, +20 is too much for the prize. I'm moving it to +10. Any objections?

Do you mean:

it's the ONLY captive fish with no other fish with?

or

that we dont usually have more than 1 of this type of fish? I meant the latter; only one of this fish, generally.

Okay, I'll be off for awhile. I'll PM Waterkeeper with the answer if he wants to pick it up. Otherwise, lilbigreef or I will pick it up again soon.

Here is where we stand...

Current Prize: $5 US

Scores Board:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pycFIIya1k-MO9UoIAYIKcg&hl=en

Current Captive-Reef Life-Form:

- Is a fish.
- Adult size on average not greater than 6".
- Is a cave dweller.
- Does not sift sand.
- Is not a Royal Gramma.
- Is not a Jawfish.
- Can be red, but not entirely.
- Is not a humpback whale.

Answers such as "No -- 90% certain" are a fair way to respond and there is no need to give up your points. Any small discrepancies should be pointed out by those who know once the answer has been found.

Good point. We need a way to close a stumper. I'm not sure we should award points for it though. The intention of the game is discovery, not obfuscation. I think it will need to be determined by dead response time.

I move that any riddle that goes unquestioned for longer than 6 hours, be closed with the answer given. The riddler does not have the option of riddling again immediately after. Sound good?

I think that should be sufficient, since I was never expecting this to be a constant red-hot thread anyway. So long as people are still involved and playing is what matters.

At the end of the current riddle, I intend to recreate the thread as "I Spy 2". Scores will carry over and a few rules will be refined.. I'm willing to hear any additional suggestions you might have regarding the refined rule set. The primary one I'm considering is giving the riddler the option to decline up to 3 questions.
