That is a very cool idea! Looks very nice. It looks to be getting maxed out though.

If you value the colony of zoas you got there, you might want to take a couple things into consideration. Your zoas need flow, or else they are going to suffer, which can lead to bacteria and infection. There is a good chance that they are going to drown themselves out from light and growing space. Inside the shell also looks like a bad spot for detrius build up.

I would recomend opening the shell further and giving them some room to grow and breath and remain healthy. Eventually you might want to split the shell altogether as they grow.

Not trying to be a downer. Its looks great! Just wanted to give ya a heads up for the future enjoyment of your very nice looking zoas.

+1 SP, good points.

Also, zoas bud from the base of the colony/frag, being a photosynthetic coral, they won't receieve any light thus any new polyps will perish. I agree with SP, I'd spread the shell until both sides touch the sand. This will give any new polyps a chance to receive light and flow within a confined space. Not trying to rain on you either. I hope they continue to prosper for you.

Oh man, didn't even think of that... I bet the stalks on those things are wicked long.

SP & Mucho makes a good point. I thought the OP filled the shell w/ substrate or epoxy to bring the frag up to the surface. Either way though, in my experience - new growth does not necessarily always occur from the "bottom" of a stalk. If any point of a stalk is touching a surface and the polyp deems it the best place to produce an offspring, it'll split onto that location.

filling the shell w/ substrate or epoxy to bring the frag up to the surface sounds like a very cool idea. Get the cool effect, and healthy zoas with a good longevity at the same time. That idea pretty much rules out any of the negatives to this very cool idea!

Till the frag starts growing over top of the outside of the shell. Those that do can easily be fragged off the shell and placed elsewhere.

Great idea kigs!
