the only reason a no from me is since I have no idea what it might be contaminated with, I would rather not risk it

I do, but I guess it would be where you get it from. :beachbum:

You say "remote beach".. as in remote to you? How long of a drive home? I would expect much of the life to die off. If you live near the coast, and know of a "remote beach" that doesnt get tourist traffic, on that hand then yes I would.

I've done it and it worked fine.

Just curious but where is most of the sand that we use in our tanks collected from? Is it 30 miles out at sea or just offshore within sight of land?

I would avoid beach sand, but sand collected from underwater in a reef zone would be fine I suppose.

threads like these make me miss my old Florida stomping grounds.

i would give anything to be able to go on some diving trips to collect stuff for my tank.

I would, I really think it would be ok. I know some would die at even the thought but I see little to be scared of. The base rosk you get from bulk reef sits outside for months!!

Our entire tank is sand from a beach (actually in the water). Hauled it back ourselves and haven't had problems. It was teaming with life too! None of the dead "live sand" that sits on a shelf.

I voted no - Apparently I do not like putting anything free in my tank. I must spend money on sand.
