View Full Version : How to keep the darn seaweed sheet from coming off the clip??

I use sheets of Nori to feed my Tang and can't figure out how to prevent fish from just ripping off the seaweed sheets as soon as I place them in the water. It's not really a matter of the clip holding the sheets, but my maroon clownfish (who is a voracious eater) will immediately go over and rip the sheet off the clip and drag it over to the anemone (who of course could care less about seaweed) and so it just floats around the tank awhile and eventually gets sucked into one of the vortech pumps and....voila! 3000 GPH pumps don't really spit it out intact. My powder blue (who is timid to begin with because the maroon clown owns the tank) can't understand why the tank is suddenly full of finely chopped Nori and pretty much doesn't eat any of it.

Anyway... any ideas?

Rubberband it to a rock. You can tie a string to it so you don't have to reach your arm in the tank to retrieve it.

I used to have the same problem.

What works for me is the grid feeding clip:

You should be able to find it at your LFS. If not, you'll find it online.

I have better success with using 2 smaller pieces compared to just 1 piece or just folding one piece in half and placing it in the clip

Add smaller pieces more often.

What I do is fold a sheet over with the cut ends facing down from the clip and use a pair of scissors to snip a fringe across the bottom half of the exposed sheet so that the fish will grab just one or two fringes at a time. Works pretty well with my greedy sailfin.

I tear the sheet into squares roughly 1.25" x 1.25" and stack them. Then I make a few small tears so when they rip it, it tears where I want it to tear. It works very well.

I also switched the clip by Julian Sprung: Big white plastic wire looking clip. It has much more tension on the seaweed. When they have eated all of it except what's under the head of the clip, I release that small amount and they chase it around the tank.

Or you can just get some gutter-guard and make one of those grids yourself.
I have a Sialfin and a yellow tang and I HAVE to use the gutter guard or the same thing will happen.

+1 for folding it before you clip it

things I did, remove NORI from package and let it get stail. its to crispy to start with.
roll NORI like a cigar and then fold in half.
I use a rubber band on the clip because I find the clips not strong enough to stop my 10'' NASO from ripping it out of the clip.
works like a charm

I fold mine up until it is about 2-3" square and put it in the clip. Works really well.

What works for me is to take a 1/4" sheet, fold it in half lengthwise, then roll it as tightly as I can down the long side - if that makes sense. :-)

I use a Mag Float magnet to hold a piece. It works well.

Likewise. No problems. Also no clownfish.
