Im getting a new stand and was wondering how can I waterproof it , and what would be a good brand of paint to get.

if you are going to paint it, i would use an enamel (oil) based exterior paint. If it is stained, i am a big fan of (you guessed it) oil based polyurethane

oil based polyurethane or epoxy paint [one step up in durability/waterproof/cleanability [guess that's not a word :)] from enamel] it's a bit pricey, but unless you're doing a room it shouldn't be bad

i use this stuff, works great as a primer/sealer
stops the wood from absorbing moisture
i used this to seal my DIY canopy on my 150g

David, talk to PelagicMagic in the NFMAS club. He recently painted his stand that was stained. There is a thread in the club area that covers how to do it. Basically, you sand it good with 80 grit and then primer, then paint it with a polyurethane based paint covered with clear polyurethane.

Plain old Kilz Primer Sealer

Shellac as a sealer followed by spar varnish. Shellac is an all-natural resin secreted by the female lac bug to form a cocoon, on trees in the forests of India and Thailand. Spar varnish (also called marine varnish) is a high quality, waterproof, and sunlight-resistant varnish named for its use on ship or boat spars and other woodwork where a glossy finish is desired. Kilz is a synthetic shellac that was developed to replace pigmented natural based shellac sealers.

So is Kilz good or bad?

OK, it looked stained but the procedures would be the same. The purpose of the primer is to keep the brown from bleeding back through and discoloring the next layer of paint.

You could also use primers and paints designed for wood boats.

Good Luck And Have Fun!!!;

Shellacand spar varnish is the traditional finish for wood boats. Kilz is asynthetic replacement for shellac and polyurethanes are a modern version of a finish for wet environments. Both the old traditional finishs perform better under more adverse conditions.

Primer is to provide a good bonding surface for finish paints and to provide a uniform surface for the finish paint so that grain and wood pores does not cause surface finish irregularities due to soaking up paints at different rates. Primer is not a sealer to prevent bledding of things as is done by Shellac or Kilz.

The Kilz and latex semi gloss will work fine but a gloss would have been a better choice. The Latex will not be as long lived as a polyurethane or Spar Varnish finish though. As you are wanting a painted surface an exterior enamel trim paint would have been a longer life span choice but it is not a water clean p paint but requires a solvent.

The minwax poly clear is what I use, works great.
The pic of stand looks stained to me too, and not bad, though hard to tell, dark pic.
You may be able to clean it and clear it.
