My test kit reads .70 before the color change on the Magnesium test kit. How accurate are these kits? I know it says within 20 PPM but I dont dose anything and bought the kit out of curiosity.

The kits are as they say- accurate to 20ppm. Do you mean you have used 0.70ml of reagent, or you have 0.70 reagent left?
0.70ml of reagent used would equate to a Mg level of 1400ppm +/-20ppm. Of course every test deends on the precision with which the amount of water is obtained as well.
When doing this test, should we include the .40 ml of Regent C, that you are told to put into the testing tube, before adding drop by drop? Also my solution goes from Pink to purple not blue by adding drops, is that normal?

I really need to know the answer to this as well.
Let's say I fill the 1ml syringe with 1ml of solution C, I add .4ml as instructed and then add drop by drop until the solution turns purplish blue.
Lets say there are .3ml left when the solution changes, does that mean I get my results by using .7ml or .3ml?
.7 x 2000 = 1400ppm mag
or
.3 x 2000 = 600ppm mag

Sorry badbread. I shouldve answered this for you when I saw you post. I didnt know it would take so long for you to get an answer.
You count how much reagent C you use total.
So you add up the .40 into the amount that was used for the drops to achieve the color change.

Are you sure?
I ask mainly because every LFS I know that sells the kit says you do not count the 1st .40, as if that is a baseline.
If what you say is true then why not have you start adding the Regent C as drops from the begining, if you just add .40 off the bat you would never know if your Mag is lower then 800ppm
Could someone from Red Sea confrim this, as when I called and spoke to Customer Service they told me you DO NOT count the 1st .40ml

.40 wont change the color unless your mag is extremely low. I still added another .30 to the mix whiched totaled .70=1400ppm
If you subtract the .40 and only counted the .30 then you would have a problem. You could add the .40 and not count it, then fill the syringe back up to 1ml, put your drops in (lets say it was .30 of reagent used) then look at the remaining solution in the syringe (.70) and it would be the same reading no matter what. whether you count it or not its still the same amount being put in and the same result.

I spoke to our techies and you do indeed include the first 0.4ml of reagent used
