Would it be ok to put an emperor and queen angel together in a 6ft tank?

I had a 3" queen with a 4" emperor no problems in a 125g tank. They were the best of buds. I know neither could be kept in a tank that small long term. I had to downgrade to a smaller tank at the time and gave them to a bigger home, which I felt they needed. What sized 6ft tank? If they both are small juvi's, they "should" be fine (every fish is different) but expect problems in the long run and a decent sized upgrade.

Well I have a 72x18x24 that im about to set up as a fowlr. I want to put at least 3 good sized fish along with the emperor and queen angels. Should I upgrade my tank before even setting it up?

I tried a townshend(bluexqueen hybrid) with my 8 inch emp and it didn't even come close to working.
If both are juvie then maybe

Yeah I was gonna introduce both as juveniles and they both probably will be the last fishes I put in my tank.

My queen is 11.5", emp is 6", no issues at all. The blue face is still the jerk at 5.5".

My queen is 8" and my emperor is 10" and he is the dominant one. They dont squabble at all, but I put the queen in at 5.5" and she has almost doubled her size in 1 year. The queen and the blueface (now 9.5") get along well too.

Oh...you'll have to wait. I am in Seattle and need to take some updated pics this weekend...
The wait will be woth it :)

The 600 is stunted at the moment. I am still waiting on T E N E C O R to send me my replacement :( Supposedly it had to go through major reconstruction and it is in hydro testing this week.
It may be another couple of months till it is close to up and running...but the good news is that my plans have expanded and now I have (3) 55g QT built into the picture for my new additions!!!

When can we expect new pics? Hmm 3 55g QT tanks, one for the clarion, one for the...the other for the.... Your killing me man!

So I can put a queen, an emperor and a blue face together? I reallly didnt know you can put that many angels together. I have never seen more than 2 angels in a tank. Please post some pics of multiple angels in a tank if you have some.

I have 4 large angels (11" Queen, 11" Blue face, 10" blue Ring and 6" Scribbled). These fish grew very quickly on me and now the Queen is displaying dominance and has become the tank jerk. She is a plump beatiful fish but I may have to sell her. the other angels dont bother with each other (except the Scribbled will chase a 4" Singapore once in awhile). Over the last few years I tried to keep an Emp. but they were all very aggressive even when introduced last. I settled for the Scribbled last Spring and it has done very well and is also growing quickly.

You had all those large angels in a 220? How small were they when you got them and how long did it take them to reach those sizes?
DamnPepShrimp
01/21/2009, 12:28 PM
twerk, it's all about each fish's personality. Each one is unique, you may have an emp and queen that don't work out, but doesn't mean any emp and queen wont. Sadly, it's a trial and error situation. Of course there are ways to help with aggression, adding order, size, different tricks like mirrors, eggcrate dividing, rearrange live rock, lights off etc etc. Don't expect to add angels and have a community tank. There will be a pecking order, its just a matter if there isn't any serious aggression/attacking.
niles do you have any pics? Sounds like you have some nice fish there!

very nice clown tang..i miss mine. i picked one up at 3.5 inches kept him for about 8 months and ended up selling him to a local doctors display tank..2 days later..dead. he had his guy come and put him in..poor guy. big mistake on my part. but i agree, they really arent all that hard to take care of mine loved to be in high flow and practically swim in place. your entire tank looks absolutely great. keep it up!

I just wasted an hour trying to get some pics on here. Why does the file size have to be so small? I only managed one close up of the blue face. i promise to put a full tank shot and more tonight. These fish were 5 to 6 inches 2 to 3 years ago. they have doubled in size since then. I feed them 4 cubes of either Formula 1 or Angel Formula every alternate day (diced up) and an algae sheet at night. for some reason, the Blue face never eats the algae sheets but devours everything else.http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/179523blueface1__2_.jpg

He said that was from 2-3 years ago, around 5-6", fish doubled since then. I'd love to see some updated shots, esp FTS.

To post pictures here easily, make a photobucket account and upload your pictures there, then you can easily link to them here and you dont have to try to have such small pictures.

If someone that can post larger pics can help me post, I will email the current pictures. Yes, that is an older shot. these fish are evry bit as large as I claim. The tank also has a 6" yellow tang, a 7" blonde naso (which hasn't grown nearly as fast as the angels. Only about an inch per year.) Also a recently added tiny humahuma.

Do what I said right above your post and you can post your own large images, it is really pretty easy.

If I put them all in when they are really small would that help them get a long better?

Good luck tonight. My daughter helped me put a short video of the tank on youtube. we caught the Queen angel doing what she does best; being the tank jerk. Enjoy.

Sweet video! That is way better then pics! You really need some more liverock in there though, the fish don't have anywhere to hide! That is a very unusual shaped tank. Very nice fish though. It looked like the bluering took a run at the queen, but I definitely saw the queen make a run at the blueface. That is pretty normal when mixing angels, no harm, but definitely a pecking order, especially with that sized angels and small of a tank.
twerk, it will definitely help adding them when they are juvi's but that doesn't go to say that when they grow up, problems will arise. Nothing is set in stone, its all trial and error unfortunately.

Thanks for the complement damnpepshrimp. that was the absolute largest tank i could get into my basement without cutting a hole in the floor. (my wife would have killed me). There is no live rock in that tank at all. i have never needed more than lots of bioballs, 100 micron mechanical filtration, a H&S skimmer, and monthly water changes. Also ph buffer every two weeks. My parameters are always in check and the nitrates are always in the 20-30 range. I rarely even check it anymore.
The tank is light on decor because these fish need the swimming room. the blue ring does high speed laps every evening and the others get out of his way. that is something i should take a video of. It is wierd.
As much as I like the Queen though, I may have to move her out. Maybe i'll use it as an excuse to have a 500g built on site.
DamnPepShrimp
01/21/2009, 09:14 PM
With those dimensions, you couldn't fit a rectangular tank in the basement? I'm sure that tank is pretty wide. I know they need room to swimm, but also need their own hiding spots. I definitely agree with using the queen as an arguing point to build a 500g tank. Maybe you should look into making a tank, you could do a plywood tank, all you need to get into your basement would be thin flat sheets of plywood and glass. Thats my plan for my upgrade, unless I somehow make a lot of money and can afford a custom built tank.

Niles...awesome tank! Your comment about the 500g is exactly why I am building mine!
It will be one big angel display.

That was a sweet vid niles! I'd love to see the bluering go for his laps while the others watch.

I dont have the guts to build my own 550g tank DamnPep. Some things need to be left to the pros like airplanes and parachutes.
I appreciate the kind words. I am glad you guys like it.
For the record, the tank is not always that aggressive. the video was taken just after i fed them and they were all riled up. However, this recent aggression by the Queen needs to be addressed.
twerk: I do not beleieve that size is the only factor here. i believe that even if the Queen were smaller it would still be as territorial. That is only my opinion.
Is it anyones's experience that a fish simply went through a phase and then stopped being a jerk? I was thinking that maybe this fish is officially a teenager.
DamnPepShrimp
01/22/2009, 06:47 AM
I think they will continue this aggression with age, definitely won't get any better. My suggestion is when you upgrade, wait a few weeks to a month and add the queen last.

very cool video.... & very nice tank/fish!!
like someone mentioned.... I would add some rock. Make a pile in the back or somewhere that they can hide... they will be happier if you do!! You have enough room in there that Mr. Blue Ring could still do laps.
I have (OK, tore it down last night) a 260g & my 10in hawian trigger would do laps as well, he preferred going through the rocks part of the time.

I do not know exactly where my Queen came from.
Great looking tank ccampbell. How did you get the Queen and Emp to get along? I went through three Emps and all were very aggressive. I settled on the Scribbled instead. You got lucky to find a passive Emp. I see why you too are looking to upgrade to a larger tank.
ccampbell57

Niles - thanks for the compliments. I have had the emperor since he was 2.5". I think the key with him is that I have had him with other fish since the day I bought him. He has had many roomates that have been way more aggressive than him. His first companion was an uber aggressive Powder blue tang. Then 3 years ago I added the blueface and he was a real a-hole to the emperor since he was almost 2" bigger. Then all of a sudden the emperor went through his color change and sprouted to almost 10" and became the king of the tank. The good news is that the emperor only pays attention to the blueface and pretty much leaves the queen alone.
I hear more grunting than I used to and have 2 more angels getting ready to add to the mix (in QT currently). So I am waiting on T E N E C O R to finish building my 10' tank.

Both of you two have sweet tanks and fish. The video was great, I think if you added some more branch, the angels would like it, just a little around the back for caves. They like their out in the open as well which you've got plenty of. I too would love to see the fast laps video if/when you can.

I love the look of live rock almost as much as the fish. I hve 2 32g trash cans full of live rock that I switch in and out of the main display when I get bored of the aquascaping.
