What causes coralline to die and turn white? My coralline in my tank is turning white so most of my live rock is white. What could be the cause? Im thinking my light is too bright? My LR used to be super purple but it started to die after I changed my lighting setup to be brighter. Is this what caused it? Thanks

sounds about right, it can bleach and die like corals, or for that matter some nice macroalgaes under high light

have you checked the parameters?

did you change anything else other than the lights?

if not, I would say it is the lights as well.

I have seen the top inch or two in my tank die....but only after the power was out for the whole day.

I would also suggest that you test your water parameters and post the results.

What exactly should I test for? My Calcium and Alkalinity are good. 8dk and 430.

Lots of things can cause that! For example, if you have a shade loving species, and you put it under too much light, it will die, but there are types of coralline that prefer higher light. It depends on so many things, not just calcium. Many purple coralline species prefer partial shade IME.

It's the lights. Coraline algae actually grows better under bright PC's than under high intensity lighting. I lost color when I switched. If you're running a MH setup, a higher kelvin rating will encourage more coraline growth than a lower one. This is from personal experience.
