Hey all.
I currently have a 90 gallon bowfront.
I have 1 true perc
1 diamond goby
1 midas blenny

I would like to get my "tang game" proper.
I want to add a powder blue and a yellow tang. My plan is to get small ones and add them at the same time. They will be provided with plenty of refuge in the rockwork and plenty room to swim in the front. Will this work? If not, is there any other tang combo I can go with? i am not content with only keeping one!!

EDIT(*)
also...I would like to add a b/w perc(A. Ocelleris) which I would be adding before the tangs, would the A. perc and A. ocellaris var. get along? the perc is small... :)

I think your plan will work, do you have a QT?

i would go with a yellow and a hippo instead of the powder blue. your 90 gallon is too small for the pb. I had a yellow and a hippo in a 75g for over 5 years before i upgraded to my current 150g. good luck

agreed, no PB in a 90. Yellow's cool, hippo, or Kole even.

yep, I knew that the pb would need a bigger tank, but my wife did not. She really liked it alot, so now after telling her that the pb needs a bigger tank, I have started building the stand for my 125.... Should be done next month and the tank and plumbing done about 3 weeks later. Wife loving the powder blue tang....$0, powder blue tang....$50...... New 125 with the works 1500+...... Gotta lover her.

Kole tang was another choice of mine. So far I'm not depressed-but I do like the powder blues a LOT.

Any other suggestions?

Size of the fish has little to do with the size of the tank to a point anyway. Some large fish do very well in a small tanks and some very small fish require big tanks. With tangs it is swimming room required...

Thanks for your input...
The reason for buying young fish was for territorial/aggression issues. I am aware that individual species require certain amounts of room. ;-D

Kole tang is a great choice, they don't get very big. It shouldn't outgrow a 90, I think they get 6" long tops.

I'll start doing my research..any other options? Can anyone suggest any other types of fish that are a little bit bigger than the clowns and gobies and stuff?

You could do a Powder Blue in a 90, but just know that it will need a bigger tank once it gets larger. They aren't the fastest growing tangs in the world either. I'd get them as small as you could and add them at the same time.

Mines probably around 5" now in my 90 Gallon and is doing fine. He'll be moved in a few months to a 180 Gallon though (6'x2'x2').

You might want to look into different acanthurus tangs, the powder blue will get really aggressive as it gets older. Lieutenant or Orange Shoulder get to similar size and are pretty awesome looking fish.

Finally, I'd probably do a Powder Blue in a 90 before a Regal Tang. Regals get just as mean, if not worse, when they get larger. They also get big than powder blues do.

I would have to agree with everyone else take out the pb and add the hippo.

Powder blue is an ick magnet. Powder blue and yellow tang should be ok but there still be some aggression.
I have a regal in my tank now. Never have another one in my tank. When this one bit the dust, that's it.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned a purple tang yet. However, if you were also going to add a kole tang, then I would either put the kole tang in first or put them in at the same time, but make sure that the kole is larger than the purple tang.

Thanks, now we're getting places!!
Amoore311-you're right up my alley. lol. That was my original plan :)
I am already sorta "outgrowing" the 90 gallon, I figure I can gather bits and pieces from now throughout the growth of the tang for a bigger tank, then I will start a bigger tank maybe even far before it reaches a larger size.

iamthereefguy-I have heard of people dealing with ich issues with this fish, but that the ich had subsided once a grounding probe was added-any input?

PackersFan-The purple tang is a beautiful fish, but I hear they're aggression is off the chaiin

Most of the bristletooth tangs stay on the smaller side. Koles are more neurotic and have problems in smaller tanks, though.

I know purple tangs can be very aggressive, ( mine never was ) but I still think it could work if you bought a small one.

Why stop at 2? I've got a 75g with 4, count 'em, 4 tangs! I have a Yellow, Hippo, Purple, and a Desjardini Sailfin. I've had them for almost a year and they are happy as hell. I expect I will eventually have to move to a bigger tank but for now they are the pride of my tank.
