So, I had a few long spinned urchins in my 180g, softy dominated tank. And it was completely free of all unwanted algie. (hair, red, etc.) But I couldn't figure out why my softies wouldn't grow, duh. Well, needless to say they ate all the algie and detritus, but also munched on the corals. Now I have removed them and am wondering if anyone knows an effective, reef safe urchin I can replace them with? It must be an urchin, as I have a very fat, hungry puffer in the tank. Thanks for the help.

not so much that they "eat" the corals as they pick 'em up or tear 'em up as they cruise on through.

i have a very tiny urchin maybe 3/4" across i believe which was identified as a viridis, he came in a small rock with some ricordeas about 4 months ago and in all that time has never left that rock. he has burrowed a hole straight through it though which i think is awesome he's never bothered the 2 ricordea, featherdusters, tunicate or sponge that is attached to that rock

I've had luck with rock-boring (the ones that kinda look like mini-longspines), pincushion, tuxedo, and pencil varieties.

Pincushions are fine. I've had one in my 90 Gallon for over a year with no problems. (Other than him picking up and moving crap all over the tank)
