I recently set up my new tank. I added a few things and am still waiting for the metal halide fixture to come in. The light is on backorder, Eddie was nice enoughto give me the T-5 fixture you see in the photos. The wires and cords are a mess and will get cleaned up but for now they are all over the place.

The packing and delivery of the system was great.

I am a firm believer in using a UV sterilizer and as you can see bigger is better.

I have included some photos of the tank, I hope you like them.

Thanks,

Elf5

sweet tank. what are your stocking plans?

I have no idea except for some type of clownfish and an anemone to host it, maybe a pair of clownfish. My previous experience is with an aggresive 125 fowlr so the reef fish are new to me (moved had to downsize). I was planning on going to a local fish store to pick their brains a bit before I put anything in the tank. I am also waiting for the metal halide lights to come in from backorder. I may put some corals that will thrive under T-5 until the new lights arrive or I may just wait and add some fish for now. What do you recommend for this size tank? I want colorful fish and fish that will be active. They each do not need to be both but a few fish with one quality or the other I think will look nice.

Nice good number of gizmos your tank has. How do you like your UV unit?

elf5
02/04/2009, 05:48 PM
The uv is great so far so good, but I have not put anything in the tank yet. The water has always been crystal clear. I know it may take longer to cycle with the uv on but I am not in a hurry.

Just an update on what I have added to the system. The wife was not happy with the overflow noise, too loud for her so I fixed that with this;

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/68954032_renamed_9453.jpg

Thanks to Rich Durso the tank is whisper quiet. The only thing I can hear is the Vortech winding up to about 2600GPH and that is not loud at all.

I also added a true union check valve in case of a power outage or pump failure.

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/68954check_small2.jpg

All of my readings are at zero and I am going to add a cuc and a fish or two later this week when I have time to get to the LFS.

After adding my clean up crew about five days ago I finally added my first fish, well two actually. They are a pair of black clowns, see pics below.

They look really big in the picture, they are both acually very small. I would say just less than an inch each.

What do you think? I am waiting for my mh day/t5 actinic/led moon lights to come in later this month before adding any corals and more fish.

Hi:

What did you do to lessen the noise in the overflow? I have a CAD 39g Pro, which came with a Durso drain, so am interested in what changes you made.

Did you use flexible PVC to raise the level of the End Cap above water? Because of the tight fit in overflow, my drain pipe ends up directly under the return hose barb fitting, so End Cap is well below top of overlfow.

Thanks for any info and you have a nice setup.

I posted the answer to this question on the Cad forum. It is under new 39 pro build. If you need more info pm and I will provide. However if you read what I posted in this thread under the fix for drain noise you can find the answer there too "Thanks to Rich Durso the tank is whisper quiet.".

I can't for the life of me find the answer to your durso mods. I checked on Cads Forum but didn't find it. I have change mine to a Hoffa and it works fine but it does nothing for the water fall noise. How did you fix it?

I made the top of the standpipe 20" or equal to the top of the overall height of the tank. This puts the intake/elbow just below the teeth of the overflow. The result is a super quit tank. FYI, I ordered the standpipe from Rich Durso (20" w/flex pipe) to fit between return and down to bulkhead. I replaced the bulkead as well.

BillyBee

Did you replace it with an 1.25" Durso from Rick? AND did you change the size of the bulkhead?

elf5
02/28/2009, 06:58 AM
This is what I used "Flexible Durso Standpipe for 1 inch Bulkhead" I did not change the size of the bulkhead. I pvc'd the one that came with the tank so it had to be replaced. It is a 1" bulkhead fitting that is used for the drain line.

I tried to upload some pics and a video to this thread but it told me I could not. I also put them on Cadlights website in the form under 39G pro discussion, new pro tank at www.cadlights.com . I am not sure if I can do this but if you want to see the pics and video they are there.

I will try to add a few to each post to see if they upload;

I am sorry to say that my two black clownfish did not make it. I spoke to the store owner and he said the clowns contracted some disease that only clownfish can get (forget the name). He thought they may have been contaminated by a wild clownfish since the fish he sold me were tank raised. I was in the store today picking up some hermits for the fuge and saw two dead black clowns like fish I purchased in a tank with several other clowns swimming around. I was told he would have a new shipment in next week to replace the fish that died. He said the disease should be out of my tank within two weeks (it will have been two weeks by then). I am new to the reef so this is my first experience with clownfish. My other fish would have had the clowns for lunch, but I had to downsize and change from FOWLR to reef. I am owed to black clowns.

For the good news, I have added a few new fish about a week ago which are doing great and my lights arrived. I have some pics of the fish and lights. I plan on adding some corals and inverts this weekend.

Hope you like the pics, I will upload a movie so you can see how quiet my tank is, loud noise is me not knowing you have to manually zoom when using a digital camera to take a movie. I was hitting the zoom button then realized it wasn't zooming in. You may hear my 2yr old daughter crying in the background, she felt the need to throw my HD Video camera over her gate which you can see in the video (not tonite) tonite she does not want to go to sleep. Needless to say the camera no longer works correctly. Phone rings and wife is on the other end, time to end movie.

Hope you like the pics and I will be posting more as I add corals to the tank.

Hey Elf cool video i love your tank. the new light looks pretty cool. i have the 39G Sig for 2 months now and the rocks are growing well so far. just waiting for the tank to cycle a little bit more before putting in corals. the tanks running great, its also super quiet even with lots of ripples on top.

i saw some of the other CAD PRO guys mod some of the stuff in theirs, are you using all stock equipment? how do you like it so far?

elf5
03/06/2009, 06:02 AM
All of the equipment is stock except for the standpipe, once my readings hit zero for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate they have not gone up at all. I did not have much of a cycle using 50lbs of live rock and live sand when I started the tank. I am very happy with the tank.

I put some new corals in my tank and took a short video of the tank. The candy cane is dying, one coral I had shipped to me. The leathers are new and still adjusting.

Been following your progress - looks good, any updates?

I have a couple questions based upon your setup/mods:

1. Is your flex Durso 1" or 1.25" PVC?
2. Did you replace the stock (green) return tubing in overflow? If so, with what size? 5/8"?
3. Did you replace the original light with the new version? How do you like the new light?

Thanks.

The only thing I changed was the original overflow pipe to the flex "Durso" pipe. I used the stock/original size bulkhead which I believe is 1". I ordered the new durso at 20" which is how tall our aquarium is. This is what makes the tank run silent except for the fans. When I ordered the tank the new lights were on backorder. When they came in Eddie shipped them to me. I have added some new corals and frags but have to take some new pics.

As for the fish my anthias got bullied and my wrasse jumped to his death. The original pajama cardinal, pair black clowns, Bicolor Pseudochromis and orange tail australian damsel are doing great. Have yet to see my panda goby but I know he is in there because I moved the rocks around and I saw him scoot from one rock to another.

I have had one coral die and my trumpets are coming back from the dead. Due to coral dying along with anthias dying in tank I have had a slight spike in nitrates to about 10ppm but I am sure a few water changes will bring it back to zero over time. All of my other corals are thriving and growing except for one frag i got for $10.00. not sure if it was due to price or what but I am hoping it comes back as well.

Sorry about the fish - I assume you are running an open top. Who bullied the anthias? Bummer about the corals. In my current tank - only 14 g - I'm having a lot of turf wars. Looking forward to having more space.

I reread your thread and now understand about the new light - how do you like it?

For the return tubing in overflow, I received green tubing, while yours is clear. Is it stock? Did it easily slip over barbs or require force?

My green CAD tubing just slips over, while the 5/8" I have would take some muscle to slip on. A little concerned about a loose connection in return.

Thanks for the info.

I used what came with the tank. The lights are nice, match the stand and look good. I do not remember how the fitment of the return tube was but you can use plastic clamps to secure the hose. I used the plastic clamps on the return tubes and have no leaks.
