I have some 96W power compacts that are a little over a year old now so I'm looking to replace them. I've seen nice lights in the 30-50 dollar price range all day long, and of course I've found some "knockoff" lights that are ten bucks each. I know I should probably stay away, because you get what you pay for, but has anybody had a bad experience with them or know about them? Lose intensity quick, burn out, explode?

Sometimes cheaper PC bulbs can be fine. Not always, but sometimes. Halides are a different story IMO. Most of the time with halides you get what you pay for.

Compare warranties though. I have been burned in the past by cheaper lights with short warranties. So, if you do go with a cheaper bulb, you may want to be sure of how long it is covered.

Otherwise, pay a bit more and get a good bulb. Most of the time, a good 96 watt bulb with a 6 month warranty will cost under $30.
