The ecomods seem to be getting some decent reviews. Rumor is that they have a better design and are more reliable on a wavemaker over the sureflows.

Got a sureflow for one of my MJ600s. Needed some flow in the center of my tank to go along with my Koralia 4s. Works good. Both ecomod and sureflow run for $14.99. Got mine from Foster and smith.

I think the Eco's and the Sure Flow's are pretty much equal. The only difference is that you'll get the large prop for free with the Sure Flow.

The only recommendation I can make that will save you some headache in the future is replace the stainless shafts with carbon fiber rod - right from the beginning. That way you want be replacing a broken shaft later on.

what is a carbon fiber rod and where can I get one?? is it easy to change out the shaft?

thanks, by the way!

Have you tried washers on both ends of the impeller shaft to stop the clattering? My Sureflow Mod only had one washer and clattered from the get go. Added a washer to the prop end of the shaft and it stopped.

There is also an airline tubing mod that is supposed to fix it too. I also have the Triton brand and it is making a lot of noise and starting in the wrong direction. I would like to try a wavemaker. I might try modding them tonight and post my results for you guys.

how long would you cut the airline tubing...just measure the amount of space between the end of the shaft and where the prop slides to??? mine has quite a bit of space there...maybe 1/2 "

I think that's how you do it. From what I remember its supposed to be pretty snug but if too tight it will stop the shaft from spinning. I'm going to give it a shot in a few minutes and I'll post my results.

Interested to know how that airline tubing works as I just installed 3 maxijet mods on a wavemaker and 1 of them clatters the whole time its on and 1 of them makes some nosie when it first starts up.

will two maxi jet 1200 that are modded 2100 be too much for a 55g?

I just tried adding some airline tubing. It makes much less noise but I noticed it was starting backwards about 1 out of 4 times, which could prove to be dangerous to my fish.

I was thinking if I did a good job covering the outlet, this backward direction might not be such a bad thing and actually help add more random flow to the tank if used on a wavemaker. I'm gonna continue to play with it. Now I need to get a wavemaker.

Depends what corals you have. If it's sps you should be fine. But I just put in 3 1200's (in addition to the 2 koralia's 4 I already had) on my 150 and it was way too much for my anemone and frogspawn. So i switched to the smaller prop (1600gph) and they seem to be doing better, but its still early so we'll see. I may end up taking one of them out.

Also, depending on what type of sand you have you may have a constant sand storm.

I have these mods from Triton Aquatics http://www.tritonaquatics.com/index_files/Page334.htm . I bought them because you can get them with the magnet mount for $30. They work great running costant but I have never tried them on a wavemaker. They make a lot of noise sometimes when starting up so I know I would have problems if I used one.

Another mod you can do is put one of the maxijet mod impellers inside of a Koralia 4. I had a friend do this and he said it greatly improved the flow. Ofcourse you will run into similar problems if using a wavemaker but I think you can do the airline mod on them also. I have one so I'm going to try it.

Check out the Sea-Flo mods. I have had four of these running for two years now. Absolutely zero complaints. Check them out. Great flow and in my opinion one of the most tasteful looking mods out there.

I always had better luck with the Sure Flow mods, especially when used with a wave timer, but they all seem shorten the lifespan of the MJs. After years of buying replacement pumps and mods I finally bit the bullet and bought a set of controllable Koralia 4s.

Random chance...

It's basically just however the impeller magnet gets picked up by the motor. It happens with almost every centrifugal pump, but there are usually safeguards in place to get it to spin the correct direction.
