Is it a must to have a skimmer on a 55 gallon FOWLR aquarium?

It is a must. No, a skimmer is not needed on any aquarium. But they are a good addition to any saltwater aquarium. A skimmer is used for nutrient export. You can do the same/similair nutrient export with water changes, a large aglea filter, or many other means. But for the long time, a skimmer is less expensive than water changes, and works faster than aglae. So I would highly suggest a skimmer. For $100 to $150 you can get a pretty good hang on the back skimmer for that size of a tank.
