a friend of mine wants to give me his 40 long because he is getting out of the hobby, it's a shame but anyway would that size tank be a suitable one for a mantis? I have heard of people putting them in tanks such as 20 gallons but it just doesn't almost seem big enough....

yeah 40 would be a nice home for a mantis that doesnt get bigger than 7 inches. Just add 3-4 inches of coral rubble and sand substrate and some live rock and watch him or her go to work!

It depends on what species of mantis you get. 40gal is plenty for a peacock mantis.

I have a 10 gal which is plenty for my N. Wennerae

make sure you don't get too small of a mantis shrimp, or it will get lost in a bigger tank.
