I have a 46 gal with 45 pounds of live rock 3" sand bed. I run a cpr hang on the back protien skimmer only for my filtration. I recently added 5 new fish. I am concerned about needing additional filtration. I have a phosphate reactor that is not in use as of now. I also have a fluval canister filter system also not in use. I have ben reading on here about some people running carbon from time to time. Shoudl I do this in the fluval? If so how long and how often. I know I should not keep any pads in it because it will create nitrates. Also should I run the phospate reactor all the time or not.

ditch the fluval idea in all canister filters are a nitrate factory get your phos reactor and put carbon in there and run it about 2 days a week should be good also be sure to clean the pads out in it often.
also i would get like 30 to 40 more pounds of live rock but that is just me. and for last you might get a ammo just if you added all those fish within the same week.

What is a ammo?? I would like to add more rock ion the future, I have ben thinking about going bigger tank wise for a while so I may bo that then. You think 2 punds per gal?

ammo is ammonia IMO i think the more LR the better because there is beneficial bacteria in the LR (that is why it is called live) and the bacteria that is in the LR is pretty much what makes the nitrogen cycle

also later on i would want to build a sump and get a in sump skimmer useally you get more bang for your buck out of a in sump skimmer. but for now the bak pak will do

I don't like the idea of a sump. I have a young child at home that loves to play with thing's. I think I am going to upgrade my skimmer to a octopus not sure what one yet. Also I want to get a hang on the back refugium.
