As i look thru photos of peoples settups here on RC, I have noticed so many sumps that are sparkling clean! You can clearly see all the equipment and stuff. My sump is coated with coraline algae, green hair algae, a huge mass of chaeto, pinapple sponges hanging all over the place, detritus on the rubble...shoud I go on? LOL
Do you guys clean your sumps regularly, or am I seeing newly settup systems? I feel like such a slob! lol. Tho my display tank is immaculate.

I was wondering the same thing. After setting up my sump I noticed all the same growth you were talking about and I just figured that the pictures you see are of new sumps

I don't run a refuge so I have no lights on my sump. Algae free. When I do a water change I vacuum out the detritus.

I clean mine when it reaches the point where I hate looking at it. About every 2-3 months.

Mine too had algae all over the glass, so I put a big cat's eye turbo in there and he has been cleaning it up pretty well. I have never cleaned it in the 3 years the tank has been running other than that. My skimmer output flows over the dsb and mangrove roots, so no accumulation of gunk.
