Do I really need the foam block? It gets clogged easily so the water level ends up too high in the tank and too low in the back which means the skimmer will not work well when the water level is not right. I just took it out and the water level instantly gets right

You will get a buildup of crud back there. You can do it but I would recommend syphoning out the detrus every once in a while.
