I have just built a stand for my 24"x24" 40g rimless cube. I made it with 2x4's and 3/4" ply for under the tank. Manufacturer recommends using 3/4" foam directly under the tank. The pieces I have are 12" wide, will it hurt to use two pieces(24"x12") side by side as long as they butt up together? Or do I need to go buy a whole new sheet?

Is your tank acrylic or glass?

OOPS, It's 1/2" glass.

Only acrylic needs foam padding under the tank. As long as a glass tank is supported well in the four corners, it doesn't need anything else under it. I would sit it right on the wood

The manufacturer says that it is necessary. It is a rimless tank and does not have plastic trim on the bottom, just glass.

If no plastic, you need it. You could probably get away with using two different pieces. I, however would use one big piece to assure that the weight is properly distributed through out the entire bottom area. I would not want that small crack there, it may just be a presonal thing.

Yeah, i guess $7 for a new sheet of foam beats $200 for a new tank.

This is before I put the plywood on the top and bottom.

I would buy a new sheet my self. But I dont' think two pieces of foam would hurt as long as its the same thickness and doesn't have much of a gap.

Just a little bit of over kill there.

BTW the 3/4" ply would have been strong enough on its onw.

lol overkill isn't even the word but I figured I wouldn't say anything. For a 40 gallon tank a box made from 1/2 plywood would have been enough..

All the joints are glued with Gorilla wood glue as well :D
It's going in my dogs room, so i wanted to make sure it was sturdy enough.

be very carful using poly glues. They tend to expand as they cure.( moving stuff out of square, so use lots of clamps and leave them on atleast a day) They also don't take finish very well.

Standard wood glue is stronger then the wood itself.

The glue is just like reglar wood glue, just made by the gorilla glue company. I didnt use clamps, everything is screwed together.

There are two colors you can use; both are available at the HD or Lowes. One is blue, the other is pink, and I think they are called Polystyrene. Again, once you see the blue or pink they are unmistakable.
