What does it mean on RC when a thread splits? And how do you view the entire thread? It seems like when I click into a split thread, I am only viewing it from the 'split' forward...

a thread can only last 40 pages. when it goes to page 41, "JOHNL", who is the main man on here , comes and makes the original thread into another.

To get to the first part of the thread, you have to go to page 1 of the "split" thread and JOHNL posts a link to get to the first 40 pages.

Seems like we need new forum software for this site. I mean I know that there are a lot of users, and rather limited processing resources on the server, but I fail to see how it should not be able to handle a thread more than 40 pages long.

Thanks for asking, and thanks for the explanation.
I always wondered about that. What's the reason?

The forum I administer has a couple threads that have thousands of replies - one in particular had 876 pages with over 35,000 posts. No problems. We run vBulletin v3.7.4
So, I was just wondering why the need...

Upgrade! upgrade!

it's rather annoying to have to click through several pages in order to get to the very first page of a long thread that you have never read. Plus I imagine that the search feature of the vBulletin v3.7.4 is more efficient. Like, maybe you could actually use it once in a while.

If we didn't have a Suggestion forum I would see the need for this thread in the Reef Discussion Forum.

As far as the "split" is concerned is not done manually it's a code among the other various codes that are used on the site.

Now, now scapes, I think you may be overreacting. It was a simple mistake.

What if you just went to the URL line and replaced the page number to a 1? Or hit 'first'?

IMO though, the best way to read long threads is to scroll to the bottom of the page and choose 'show printable version' then select 'show all posts on one page'.

I rarely use the search feature. It does seem to be better than it used to be though. The primo membership is worth it when you need to use RC's search engine. With that said, I don't know anything about the revised version of VBulletin mentioned above.

Google can often do a better job though...

I think we should go through the entire site and sort all the threads into their proper categories. No.

i goofed. gman is right. I sometimes forget how many topic catagories are on this forum. This site is so huge its alittle intimidating. I keep my sanity by only surfing a few of them.

And I was pointing out, through the medium of sarcasm, your overreaction to the gently put point he made. :)

Let's all not take ourselves too seriously. :)
