I am using 2 250w Jagers to heat about 100g of water. Air temp is 60 but they only seem to be able to heat the water to 74. I have the heaters set at 81degrees. Are the Jager internal thermostats reliable? Is this too much of a temp swing to ask of 500watts?

Well with out a chiller exc. theres no way around a temp swings. Theres nothing wrong with temp swings as long as that dont happen to fast. I havent ran a heater in a tank for over 15 years.

tank water temp goes from 74 in the morning to 77 in the evening before the full-on lights go down to evening mode.

I would turn them up a bit, 74F is a bit on the low side, IMO.

I have a 50g and 1 Jager150w keeps temp stable between 77-78F. I think the dial is set to 80F. I would not trust the dails, go by something else to monitor temp...
