View Full Version : who else runs a 250w?
So I have upgraded my lighting to a 250w reef optix pendant with a pheonix 14k and a ice capp ballast. I have a 24g aquapod and I have heard alot of people tell me that this is overkill. and although I agree its alot of light, i still think it will produce great results. Am I alone in this or does anyone else run this kind of setup on a nano?
thanks

I have my light 8 inches off the water level w/ a 10w actinic. I keep the MH on 6 hours (3:00pm-9:00pm), and the Actinic for 9hours (1:00pm-10:00pm) Plus I have 10w LED moonlights I run 24/7.
No problems with heat. I have a fan mounted to the wall behind the tank that comes on/off with a timer the same time the MH turns on/off.
Check out my last pics thread...Actinic pics and MH pics..

sounds like a good setup. I would like to run my mh a bit longer. you think that would be ok? 8-9 hours is what i would prefer. what are your thoughts?

IMO - 8 hours would work, but 9 hours is a bit much. I just like less algae growing on my glass...
plus I still see good growth with only 6 hours..
yeah i like the growth, but i think the longer hours are more for viewing pleasure. lol

i Used to run one when i had a biocube, it was a aqualight MH with two 65 PC's and night lights, it had legs so i just rested it on the top. the PC's came on around 11 to 9 and MH was on from 12 to 3 and again from 4 to 8. I broke it down because anotther reefer had tried it with groth sucsess and i must say that it worked perfect, the corals were all happy and growing faster than normal.

I have a 36" PFO fixture with dual 250W Coralife 20KK's and two 36" VHO's burning over over my 30 gallon custom AIO tank. The fixture is centered diagonally over the display section in front, which has a volume of 18 gallons. The halide bulbs are about 13" above water level. My tank is 14" tall. The ballast is a dual PFO HQI magnetic ballast.
Lately, I have been running only the two VHO's during the day - one is actinic and the other is a 10KK. When I get home from work, I turn on the halides and turn off the VHO's for about 5 hours.
I have been thinking of going down to 10KK 175W bulbs, but I am having a hard time finding two PFO female adapters so I can easily hook up my two Blueline E-Ballasts. I would then lower the fixture a bit closer to the top of the tank. I ordered the female adapters from Hellolights, but they are on backorder.
