Keep light out of it and make sure you have a lid on it..then the water wont go bad

so i dont have to keep a powerhead inside with the water? i keep a lid on it and no light already. but the only thing that worries me is when i pick up the lid to check on it or take water out i smell mildew. is that normal? thanks for the quick response

See the "stale water" thread. Mine always smells mildewy but havent had any problems.

I would keep a powerhead in there. Also, what kind of garbage can do you have. Brute cans are reef safe; others may leach impurities.

I simply store mine in a brute, with a heater and an airstone. The brute holds 25 gallons and I go through about 40 gallons a week, so it doesnt sit in there very long.
