Does the wire have to point down? or can you run the wire up to the lip of the tank to help conseal it?

I believe the wire should always point up, and be secured in place with the supplied achors

it doesnt matter how the cord faces. the only reason they have it facing up is because of how they are securing it. The older magnets and when you clean the pump the dryside could fall off the tank. But i always take both sides off anyways so...

The reason for having the cord up and secured via the supplied hanger is just in case the pump falls off the cord wont hook anything and cause the outer half to slam into the side breaking the side of a glass tank.
