I love flame angels and I hear mixed thoughts on their compatibility in a reef. So I ask the question, are flame angels reef safe???

I have one that is fine. I have both lps and sps corals. However, I think it's luck of the draw.

i love them too.....but mine certainly wasnt reef safe, but then in my experience none of the centropyge are reliably reef safe. besides trying flames i've tried multicolor, resplendens, acanthops, argi and potters.....all eventually nipped at my corals. what a bummer too as they look sweet in a reef.

X2. Except I don't have an angel in my reef :D

You will get some people that say they are 100% not reef safe, and have had them go on rampages nipping everything they can get their little lips on. OTOH you will have people that have had no problems whatsoever and they have been model citizens. I think it all has to do with the individual fish.

MAYBE... JUST MAYBE

I think that if they are fed plenty of food, then they are less likely to nip at corals.

I keep a flame angel in my soft coral tank.
They do nip a coral occasionally, but I believe that they are just going after the slime coat, not the meat of the coral.
As long as they don't go back to the same place there is no real harm.

Like has been said, some are, and some aren't (( Lucky enough I am in the some are group )).

Ideally you would buy one from a fellow reefer that has similar corals, and you know that it isn't nipping on them.

Otherwise it is going to be a luck of the draw sort of thing. You have to weigh the risks of it nipping against trying to get it out of your tank.

I have a flame and a cherub. Both are fairly well behaved they will nip on occasion. I have a swallow tail that will occasionally nip. I think it is luck of the draw. You need to determine if they are worth the risk

I have a flame and it has been fine with the corals

Depends on the fish

Add one to the good citizen tally, though i've only had him in my 180 mixed reef for about 2 months. Prior to him, I had a coral beauty that was good as well. I don't feed a lot either. Maybe I'm just lucky. Maybe I just am no good at raising tasty corals...?
