Measure how much room you have and then check here

Make sure to leave yourself plenty of room to stick your arms in there and play with stuff. Most likely you will be doing that constantly.

I just plumbed my first sump recently and my suggestion is to make it as basic as possible. I had to make some changes to my initial plan, but now my sump/ refugium is very efficient and quiet. Since you are building a stand and a sump make sure to include everything you want now so you don't look back and wish you would have handled it differently.

I have an oak stand, the problem is the stand only allows for a sump 10" wide and less than 14" deep.

Keep your eye out for a cheap/free 75-90 gallon stand. It will allow a much wider sump & easy upgrade to a larger tank down the road. Two pieces of wood verically along the back of the tank & it would look good.
