Im trying to decide which setup would be better.

Both systems are about the same cost for the controller + 2 pumps.

Which one would you choose and why?

I have the Tunze setup so I can only comment on those. The Tunze are excellent! Quiet, efficent, and adjustable. The only downsides are price and they are big.

I have heard the Vortech's are a little noisy?

+1 tunze 6101 series with multicontroller.

I recently had one break, i sent it to tunze usa and had it back within the week for free.

I am going Tunze and not Vortech just because of the noise. I have my tank dialed ina nd it runs almost silent and the hum of the vortech irritate me.

Im not sure what generation all the loud vortech comments come from. I have seen them on multiple tanks and cant hear them at all. Vortech gen 2 = silent

Not sure what generation but I think it was only noticeable because the motor was outside of the tank.

is the tunze a bigger unit than the vortech?

I like the vortech b/c it doesnt involve the cords in the water, but it seems they may not be as reliable.

I've had both and i can tell you both can be unreliable, do not make your decision based on that. Yes tunze is a much bigger pump, to the point where people who come to my house and ask me if I have underwater video cameras installed. To me vortech has a much cleaner look, but one disadvantage is that you cant direct it down or up like the tunze, the noise level from both is virtually undetectable. But vortech gets a +1 from me.

Are you getting the 6101 used, or old stock? The 6101 has been replaced by the 6105 which is a completely different design.

I have owned both 6101 and Vortech and prefer the Tunze for many reasons. Noise level is the biggest one. I also like the Tunze controller better and the flexibility of mounting methods and positions. I also didn't care for the look of the Vortech motor and power cord on the outside of the tank.

I have the old tunze 6100. They are fantastic, quite, and put out TONS of flow.

It depends how you want flow in the tank. The tunze sent out streams or jets of water such that you can allow them to crash together and create random flow in the tank.

The vortechs send out a really wide spread. In my opinion it depends on the corals you are going to keep and your rockwork.
