So I picked up a 5g tank for my mantis about a month ago. Last few days this guys been patrolling the front of the tank. What is it?

Thanks for the reply. But I am leaning towards not safe. Some of these stars are known to eat corals. I had a very tiny green mushroom go missing a week ago, it may have been the stars dinner, as it's the only thing known to eat coral in there. Other inhabitants are hermits and the mantis.

I have a bunch in my tank and all my corals are fine....

I believe they only eat coraline algae.

I have alot of them also and I have never seen them on any corals or any of my corals go missing.

I have thousands in my tank, I've only seen them eat film algae. At most they might annoy the occasional zoanthid by crawling across it but I have no reason to believe they have caused any harm.

There are several different kinds, some of which eat zoas, some of which eat coralline, etc. Mine are coralline eaters, and they got so bad that they were turning my rock white from eating all the purple off. The addition of a harlequin shrimp solved that problem. ; )

Just keep a close eye on yours and take the appropriate action.
