(may be OT :o )
...to create anaerobic areas for denitrating bacteria to reduce the need for water changes. Does it sound possible?

you should go ask a freshwater forum.

I'm not sure about freshwater bacteria, but if there are denitrifying ones in FW, I'm sure it would work. You'd still need sifters for the sand.

Going way back to my FW days and thinking of the under gravel filters and vacuuming the gravel itself...all I can see is the sand getting really messy.

I have a 55 heavily planted freshwater. I've noticed that it needs less and less cleaning of the deep gravel bed that I have. When I went to clean the gravel a few days ago there was almost nothing...plants are eating it all..probably my huge Amazon Swords.
I have no sand (gravel stirrers)

That too. I've also noticed dark areas at the lower regions of the bed. I just think I've seen a connection between the bed and nitrate production (using gravel).
I've picked up a 55 with gravel and I want to kick the freshies out of my 36 to use it as a refugium so I might combine the gravel from the 36 with that from the 55 for a deep gravel bed.
Oh, and BTW, no UGF.
