My trates are at 20 Im trying to get them down what food is everyone feeding there fish and inverts?

I feed flake and pellet and mysis but Im having a hard time keeping my trates down I change my water 10% every week.

Im only feeding once a day should I feed every other day or once a day just barley a pinch?

Sounds like you need a game plan for nutrient control. You can control nitrates with denitrification filters, remote deep sand beds, and carbon dosing, to name the more commonly used methods...

Is this on your 12g Aquapod tank...? For a tank that small, larger weekly water changes should do the trick fairly well.

It's better to control the nitrates these sort of ways, rather than starving out the tank and fish. Feeding once or twice a day with a variety of foods is good, and sounds like what your are doing...

Are you rinsing the mysis? There are a lot of oils and nutrients in the "soup" they are frozen in. This alone probably isn't enough to raise the nitrates that high, however, its something to consider.

For the mysis I just started doing this I take some tank water and put it in a cup and thaw the mysis out.
I then will suck as much water out as I can with the turkey baster and then add more tank water to the cup to feed my fish and corals with.

I'm curious as to why this is in the SPS keepers section?

I just bought some sps and I know they do not like high trates that is the only reason Im posting this in here.

nitrates are the breakdown of ammonia from things like dead fish, etc.

the worry with foods should be phosphates.

Regardless, if you have good filtration, there should be no issue.

It is easier to rinse mysis out with a brine shrimp net. Just run it under some RO water, and then you can put it in a cup to soak in selcon or something, or you can just put it in the tank.

Are you running a skimmer?

no skimmer not sure they make a decent skimmer for a 12 gallon aquapod?

I also rinse the mysis with tank water. Mix it up real well, wait for them to sink, then decant (drain skillfully) the water off - twice. Anyone ever thought of target feeding corals with this waste water?

I'm suprised it hasn't been asked yet, but how many and what fish are you keeping in the tank?

Water quality shouldnt be an issue in a nano. I would bump up the water changes. I would also check the trates and PO4 in your make up water to be certain its clean.

why would you want to put dirty phosphate laiden water directley into your corals?
why dont you just thaw the mysis and whatever else in some RO water then poor it through a net and dump out the water its not that complicated.

I guess I wouldn't. I've been growing corals for three years - mostly SPS. I'm trying to figure out the best stuff to feed them.
