I have a very pretty pink n green lobophyllia that has grown onto the surrounding rocks. The problem is i'm building a new tank and will want to transfer the coral to the new tank but not the HUGE rock it's growning on to. The skeleton itself has grown onto the rock, should I:
A - Break it off and hope it heals.
B- Give it up with the rock (dont risk killing it).
C- [Insert Great Idea Here]

Dont risk killing it. If it's just the skeleton you could probably break it off, but if there is any flesh that will be torn I would say it would probably not make it.

Can you move the rock with it? If the rock it is on is too big, get out a hammer and chisel and make it smaller.

Make that 3 for making the rock smaller. Carefully!

...or run the rock through a tile saw but that will leave you with an unnatural looking cut in the rock...

The rock it's attached to is an amazing rock, it's about 30 lbs, and fills 1/3 of my 55 gallon tank. The rock consists of several vertical branching tonga rocks that end in a fairly level top shelf of about 10" x 18". This rock has been allive and in my care for over 5 years... there is no way i'm going to hammer this rock.

all you need to do is break the connection between the brain and rock..... if there is tissue left on the rock that part will continue to grow more brain and the brain itself will heal too... no need to destroy the rock itself

of course my favorite reply is "just send it to me, I'll see what I can do" :smokin:

if you're not going to keep the rock, why does it matter?

thats a silly question, why would I destroy it is a better question. After paying to ship it and host it for several years I should at LEAST pass the rock on to someone else for them to enjoy.

Take it to your LFS and trade for some store credit.

I'm ashamed of my LFS to be honest. I've decided to just try to snap it off and see if it heals, gonna wait a few days until the next scheduled water change. I'll put up some pics, lets see how it goes.
