Has anyone done an external skimmer without a sump? I am doing a peninsula style tank and will have 10"-12" between the tank and the wall. I was thinking of getting a recirc skimmer and putting it on a stand. Feed it with a powerhead in an overflow box in the tank and drain back into the tank.

Wondering if anyone has tried this and what people think.

It is do-able. Here's what I did. Not setup anymore because my tank turned to crap. I feed it from a tee in the return. It would be better to feed it with its own pump for more consistency.

If you kept the tank 12-13" from the wall, you could fit a std cheap glass tank back there for a sump.

I think it would be much easier to drop in a skimmer & return pump & be done. Also the added benefit of keeping your heater, ato float switches & any probes out of sight. This will also keep your display tank level constant.
