I have a large elephant ear too. It's at least 12" across. Let me tell you, they can catch and kill fish. Here's a pic of mine expelling an Ebili Angelfish.
When it was smaller, it often formed a cup and nearly caught several fish. Now that it's larger, it stays fully open most of the time and doesn't seem interested in catching fish any longer. I'm not sure what changed other than it's size.

Thanks Markus. I had no idea what they were. I have them named as Bubble Coral, Frogspawn, and I don't know about the other.
Softies include leather, toadstools, and what else?
As you can tell I am an expert.
KarlBob
03/31/2009, 05:07 AM
In general, the easiest way to tell that bubble corals and frogspawn/anchor/hammer corals aren't soft corals is by the fact that they all have a hard skeleton that the soft bits grow around.
Soft corals are members of the octocorallia - they have tentacles that grow in groups of eight. Stony corals (SPS and LPS) are hexacorallia - they have tentacles that grow in groups of six.
Just to confuse things, there are two members of the octocorallia that have stony skeletons - blue coral (heliopora) and organ pipe coral (tubipora). They're still normally considered soft corals.
More exceptions and qualifiers: Gorgonians are also octocorallians, so in a sense they're soft corals, too. Although many people include zoanthids and mushrooms (corallimorphs) as "soft corals", they're actually hexacorallians.
Soft corals include finger leather, christmas tree, devils hand, cabbage leather, toadstool, xenia, anthelia, "blue xenia" (actually cespitularia), Kenya tree, colt, carnation, spaghetti leather, cauliflower leather, green star polyps, clove polyps, etc.

They also replaced the word fishing with wreathing. you may not have noticed it unless you looked at people's hobbies. I'm hoping that the loss of TOTM is also a joke that they haven't rescinded yet, was nice drooling over rich people's displays.
Nice softies everyone. Although now that I know how big some can get, my shopping list for my 14g BC just got a whole lot shorter.
When they get big, cut a branch off & sell it to a fellow reefer.

A few from my tank in progress- sorry for the poor image quality...
Sarcophyton. Currently about 16" fully expanded. It has split itself into 4 pieces over the last year, had it not, it would be well over 2 feet across. The mother colony has been in captivity since 1987.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y183/Aguabeast/General%20240%20pix/Toad.jpg
Pulsing Sinularia; one of two colonies in this tank, all grown from a 2" single branch I got at a swap 3 or 4 years ago. This colony is 24" across when fully open- currently bends at the top of the water.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y183/Aguabeast/General%20240%20pix/PulsingSinularia.jpg
Green Polyp Toadstool. Not a monster yet, but has grown from a 1/2" nub to about 8" across in about 2 years- slow grower.

Heliopora- one of my favorite softies. Ive had this about 4 years, and it has grown 4 or 5 times its original time. Now forms a few small islands above the water line.

And a section of my tank that has many of my softies all together

That's a great looking Heliopora. Under what conditions does yours extend its polyps?

Thanks; normally it extends in the evening, after the lights have been on at least 8 hours or so. It's sitting about 8" under a 250w mh and right between a return and a circulation pump- it loves intense light and super high water flow.

Gary, its almost impossible for me to frag; the skeleton is too dense to safely use fragging shears (if it cuts at all, it winds up smashing pieces apart), and its spread over 4 Large pieces of rock that I cant move without dismantling nearly 1/3 of the tank. If I do frag it at some point, I will give you first dibs for sure; maybe for a piece of that Nephthea once it grows out... ;)

Aaron,
you have a deal that Nepthea is finicky to say the least and is growing slowly and will be a while before I would even feel comfortable fragging it
Here is some of mine.
