My husband and I are in the process of setting up a 125g. We bought some live rock from a local guy that was getting out of the hobby. It has been a brute trash can with a heater and powerhead for a month now waiting on us to finish the tank. I tested the water in the brute Ammonia- 0 Nitrite- 0 Nitrates-0-0.5.
My question is when we put this live rock in the tank will we be okay since it tested good in the trash can or would I still need to add a shrimp to start the cycle once it's in the tank. Thanks so much for the help.

Was the rock out of the water for a long period of time when you bought it from the previous owner? I would think if you've had it for a month now and are getting zero readings it's good to go.

The rock was in a rubbermaid tub with lid for about a hour total with the drive home.

IT sounds fine. If you get no spike within a week your good to start adding a clean up crew.

I also agree that you should be good to go. A couple good water changes will probably reduce the nitrates!!
