I ordered an orchard dottyback from liveaquaria today, and after school my dad suprised me by picking up a midas blenny at the LFS. So would both fish be fine in a 10 gallon qt for a few weeks, or should I put one in the DT and one in the QT?
Thanks in advance,
Matt

Dottybacks are known to be aggressive and territorial at times, so i would say just make sure you have enough cover in the QT tank for the blenny to hide in. But keep an eye on the blenny to make sure it's not getting harassed. The dottyback will stake it's claim in a part of the QT and as long as the blenny doesn't get into that territory then you should be ok. Hope this helps.

I would disagree with that. All new fish should be put in QT unless they are too delicate to survive. Of course you can do what you want.
The 10 gallon should be fine for the two fish. Just add some PVC pipes to allow for hiding places and watch for agression. I have a Green Chromis in my and added a small Foxface a week ago. Just keep a good check on the levels, but I don't believe either fish of yours is a big load, unless you feed heavy.

fish come with many diseases that are not first noticed and can be fatal for a reef tank and other fish. A fish can carry ich and not show signs until it is stressed. If you put a fish into a display without QT then you are running the risk of introducing disease into your system. Although this is strictly opinion and experience based, I QT all livestock before it goes in my tank.

This is not true. All fish should be quarantined before putting them in the display. There is no way of knowing a fishes true health without observing it in QT for at least 2-3 weeks. Diseases can appear weeks after purchasing them.
Your two fish should be fine in the 10g QT tank. Just buy some pvc pieces for them to hide in and keep up with the water changes to help with the water quality. Good luck

Thanks for the replies. I'll put both in QT. I don't think aggression will be a problem since orchard dottybacks are generally peaceful.

How's this.....
I used to shoot heroin and play Russian roulette with my friends on a regular basis.....
I never had a problem and neither did my friends.....
You should try it.....
Oh, I meant to say "I'm just saying what worked for me".

Good to see this poster has "enough" experience to go around giving bad advice.
If you DO NOT quarantine, you ARE taking a risk with your current fish. Yes, many people do not QT. Many people also loose display fish to disease. Ultimately, it is up to the aquarist, but they should be armed with proper information.
Perhaps the poster has confused the terms "quarantine" with "hospital" tank.

Please no flaming. The guy may have not have been educated correctly on quarentining, but that's no reason to flame. Anyway both fish are being dripped together right now. However, the blenny has his tail out of the water. Will he be ok like this?

Ok, both fish are in QT now. When I woke up this morning, it was swiiming out in the open. The midas blenny is in a cave and hasn't swam around much yet. I also am having an algae problem in the QT. I added a few snails to try and help w/ the algae, since I'm not going to use the tank to treat any diseases/parasites that may occur in the future. I'm also going to try and feed them today. Any suggestions on the first food I should try?

Packersfan, I noticed you have middle school as your occupation. Based on your previous posts I am assuming you are in middle school and don't teach it (if not I appologize.) I'm a middle school teacher and I just want to tell you how impressed I am with, not only your knowledge of this hobby, but also how mature you seem to be. "Please no flaming. The guy may have not have been educated correctly on quarentining, but that's no reason to flame. " I know many adults who could learn a lot form you. Very impressive.

Some frozen (and defrosted) mysis shrimp and/or cyclopeze make good first foods. Even finicky eaters will usually take those foods pretty quickly, than you can introduce dry foods once they start eating reliably.

bigworm175: Thank you for the compliments, and yes I am a student.
billsreef: Thanks I'll try that, mysis woked w/ the jawfish I had before, so hopefully it will work now too.

Ok, I tried feeding mysis shrimp and the midas blenny took it, but the dottyback stayed in his cave. The dotty back was swimming quite a bit today though. The blenny has been mainly sitting in the rocks, but its also been picking up sand and spitting it out???

I like to quarantine for 8 weeks with copper, I know this seems to be overkill to some, but this will give ample time for all the ick to go through its life cycle and be killed in the water column so there wont be any left to reattach to the fish and be transferred to the display tank. I killed my whole tank one time when I first started, everything was doing fine but then I added that one fish...

The dottyback will get comfy and start feeding within a couple of days ;)
