View Full Version : Beware the evil powerheads

I lost my Banggai Cardinal last night to a Koralia. Aside from the grief, it concerns me. This was only a Koralia 3, I don't have excessive flow as far as I know. Now I feel I can't keep smaller fish. My plan was to stock them as young fish and watch them grow. Does anyone have some advice?

Does your koralia have the fish grill over the front?

I would not attribute your Cardinal's death to the Koralia. A healthy fish should not have a problem with them. My guess would be that your fish was having other problems.

How are your water parameters?

I keep hearing about power heads killing things but then I look at them and they seem to be well shielded??

I don't think that the koralia would be able to kill a healthy fish either. May have been something wrong with the fish to start with.

My clownfish rubs up against a k4, that's a sick fish, not a powerhead problem.

I see what you're saying. A few points to note are that this fish has been fine till now. I performed a small alk reduction yesterday that saw the pH drop to 7.8 for about half an hour but it was fairly straight forward. I then dripped some kalk and the pH was/has been stuck on 8.2 as it normally is. Amm, N and N are zero.

This fish had a problem since I put the Koralias in which is why I figured that might be the issue. Basically the fish couldn't outswim them and has had to take up residence behind them and beside a heater.

Maybe he just couldn't reach his food anymore? If this is true then my issue remains?

+1. I agree with those above.

Yes. BTW, my corals and other fish are fine.

I just don't see how it couldn't handle the flow unless it was sick.. In my 150 I have a cardinal with 2 k4's and 2 tunze 6101. How long had you had your cardinal and was it wild or captive bred? I have had bad luck with wild caught cardinals as well as many people I know. The captive bred ones are fairly rock solid.

I'd had it for about a month (so it was small) and I don't know whether it was wild or captive bred.

When I suggest it couldn't handle the flow, it would get near the power heads, its fins in the wash would flail about and it looked like a chicken that had turned backed into to the wind. It would appear to panic swim away to calmer waters then stay there. Before this it would just get about wherever.

cards don't typically like serious flow...they'll find a moderate area and just sit. The fact that he was near a power head would suggest he was probably sick and incapable of steering away.
