Hello, I'm setting up a 120 gallon reef tank. Hopefully SPS dominated and heavily stocked. I plan to use a 50 gallon tank as a sump with dimensions of 36x18x18. The top has a center brace leaving two openings of about 16.25 x16.25. I'm wondering if i can fit the MSX1S skimmer in there without dremeling the top trim?

Also , not directly related; can I cut out the center brace entirely if I won't be running the water level to the top?

You might be better off to wait on the MiniS Cone.

A mini on ~170G of water with high bio-load and sps?????

Ahhh, good catch! I just saw the 120, that extra 50 gallons does make a difference. We have not had a MiniS in the shop yet, they may actually be able to handle that volume. We have a 2S running in a 1100 gallon propagation system at the shop, it has far exceeded what I thought it would do.

All that being said, I want to set up a 1S and get some idea of how much it will pull, and some video to share with you all too. The 1S would definitely have to run with a meshwheel impeller, no doubt about it.

Thanks for the replys so far. I guess my main question is dimensionally; will the msx1s "physically" be able to fit in a 50 gallon tank (36" long)with the stock center brace in place? Also will this skimmer be an OK match with a 150 - 160 total volume system?

Let me check the dimensions of your sump.

The 1S is 12"x16"x24"...so I would say that yes, it will fit in your sump (50g, 36x18x18?)

I am able to fit the 2S with both pumps and standpipe attached into my 50 breeder, same dimensions as your tank. I do have to remove the collection cup though, but that is no big deal at all, it goes right back in place. ;)

it looks like you have that thing set to skim SUPER dry :)

How is it working out for you so far?
