View Full Version : adding sand to established reef

i currently have a very fine sand bed its about 3 inches deep ( in some areas) i have 100lbs of live sand i bought from a local reefer. and id like to add some to my established 54 corner tank. Can i do this? and if so whats the best ways/do's/dont's?

You can add it. HAs it been kept at the correct temp since you bought it? You dont want to add it if it has die off.

Use a cup to slowly scoop it up and then lower the cup in tank and pour it in. Powerheads off of course. Or you can use a funnel and a hose to get it downto the bottom.

no when i bought it the guy had it in a bucket in his kitchen and he said he had taken it out a few weeks before i got it, and i didnt think anything about it so i have just had it sitting in the same bucket for about a month now.

see i bought it originally for a new tank im setting up, but just thought id add a little to my existing tank and now im building a sump for my existing tank and i was gonna use it for the sand bed in the fuge.

I think its safe to say its no longer live sand :D

if you rinse it really good it should be fine
