I just got a TDS meter and I was wondering what others tap water TDS reading is?
My tapwater starts out at very close to 100 +/- 5
It reads 002 or 003 after the RO/DI process.
How bout your tapwater?

mine starts out at about 300-350 ppm (well water) after the RO/DI it's about 15-20 ppm currently ... but that's because i need to change my filters =)

Ive been wondering if my TDS is correct, when i turn the facuet on its at like 25 but after about 10 minutes it shows that the incoming water is 0 TDS all my RODI comes out 0. I cant imagine any city water is 0 TDS
I live in an apt building in westchester NY, maybe the apt complex has some sort of water filter. It uses old school steam heat to heat the apts .

i would suggest getting a tds meter calibration fluid and calibrating your meter. if, after that, it still comes up 0, then that my friend is awesome.

mine goes from 20 to 200,most days its around 45 . i have been told by many that a tds reading under 250 is "great" for drinking

itsdarrow, I'm in manhattan (I think we're on the same water?) and I've never let it run but from the get go I think mine is at 35. I'll test after letting it run on monday. Either way, we are certainly among the lucky ones in that respect.

I used to test all the time and would mostly get between 11-15 with the highest I remember being around 40 after a huge storm.
I checked about a week ago and got 8. Yes it was calibrated ;)
I get 0 TDS after RO but run a DI anyways to be safe. Most people I know around here have DI that last a year. They aren't used much :D
Many of my reefer friends also just don't use DI.

Heh well I would have to go against that... I live in a small town south of Montreal and just north of the NY border. Tap water is usually between 900 to 1100 ppm of TDS. I should add that it's well water and not city water.

Holy crap. I thought mine was bad at 650. After going through a 5 stage RODI unit the best I get is 4 TDS. I'm happy with that.

This is OT, and I dont want to hijack thread (it's interesting to see everyone's readings).
Can someone PM me with a response: Why do you use RO and DI? Why not just DI (i.e. what does the RO do that just going straight to DI wouldn't? If DI gets you to 0 TDS is that just as good as an RODI system?)
If you have link to a thread that would also be helpful. Thanks very much!

RO/DI FAQ (http://www.reefcentral.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=2)
Short version, it'd be expensive. It would work, but you'd go through DI resin really fast, which would be very cost effective.

Tap 160-200
RO/DI 0
Interestingly, my father in law has a different water company/ source, and he never get above 20 from the tap.

02/23/2009, 10:42 PM
Just to add a little. There is a way of recharging DI resin. I'm tempted to work out a system with 2 x 20" DI cartridges and continuously recharge them. Not sure I want to put it into action yet though...
