this was growing in my sand (i took all the LR out to sterilize them a few days prior to taking this pic).

anyone have any idea what this crap is?? it inspired my subsequent switch to bare bottom.

the reason i took out the rock was b/c of this slimy gunk that i couldn't identify or get rid of. whatever it was i think was caused by my sand.

it's so gross it was like reaching for my fish.

It looks like some type of dinoflagellate growth.

See the following for more information:

thanks for reply. it's nasty.

if it helps - it started out like a white-ish film and got longer and longer, stretching out further and turned rusty colored over time.

It's the blob!!!!!!!!!

Did you try 15% water changes every other day for a week straight? Did it help?

SSB? Looks like cyano to me. Not much to say now since you went BB, but my guess is that the SB was depleted, or lacked the appropriate critters. Just my guess, the dark sand makes it really hard to see well.

very basic right now while i let these rocks get acclimated. i have like 3 times as much rock left to put in over the next week or two, and i have a tunze powerhead on the way. not sure if i will use both that and the koralia or replace the koralia (having issues with it lately).

i will aquascape later.
