Should I use "Purple Up" or just let the LR turn purple on its own. Also will it mess with any of my water perms.
Thanks
Brooks

Get the 3 main params in balance---alk 8.3-9.3, cal 400-420, and mg 1300, and you'll get purple without any problem.

I think this has been ask ever so often. You will most likely get about 9 out of 10 who say leave it alone and then 1 out of 10 who swear by it. I used it in my first tank and I can say it didn't hurt anything, but I can't say it helped either.

I spend the majority of my time scraping coraline off my glass, why would I buy something which helped it along? :D

You're lighting also effects coraline growth, along with a lot of other factors, so just adding purple up won't garauntee its success.

Yeah, i use it... But i don't really know how well it works...
Nothing seems to change, but i already have a lot of Coraline on my rocks.

It just basically adds calcium to the water......based off of that, it should help start and maintain coraline as coraline feeds heavily on calcium. But note, there are better means of adding calcium. Also, make sure your parameters are within the proper range and don't fluctuate much...

i had low calcium levels and little to no Coraline. When i started using PU it increased my calcium levels to about 400 and i saw a increase in Coraline growth. i think its a good product

You don't need it. I used to use it, and I have more growth now then when I used it. If you want to do something drip kalk. Kalk will help way more than purple up wil.

I over dosed my tank about a month ago and still cant get it back to normal. its not worth it.

You need coraline algae for purple up to work, if you put it in with dead rock then you'll get no results.

Snake Oil. Save your money. Just keep your Mg/CA/ALK within range and soon you'll be cursing the coralline algae covering your glass...

just a bit of advice I've learned,

if you are going to add anything to your tank, make sure you can and do test for it.

I've used PU for 2 months and really didn't see any results, however I stopped and just started dosing calcium brought my level to 450 and the growth is a lot better.

My advice: take that money and buy a cal test kit and kent marines liquid calcium and dose accordingly....

I was using the PU in the beginning with my live rock. The guys at my LFS suggested using a two part instead of the PU. I have noticed a difference with the two part in two weeks, coraline is growing on Corilla's and glass now. I assume the two part just helped raise the Ca levels more than the purple up. Good luck.

I wouldnt use it.. read the back of the bottle and see whats actually in it. Theres nothing that promotes the growth of coralline algae. Just keep your water parameters in check and it will pay off and before you now it coralline will be growing everywhere. good luck

pretty much my experience. I have 3/4 of the bottle left so its pretty wasted....

IMO dosing with Purple Up is like taking a multi-vitamin.

It has to be doing something, but you won't notice much change; and if, and when, it does change you will probably attribute it to natural growth. :)
