Hi ,,,,,

Is it important to turn off skimmer when you dose vodka ?

I dont, and I see no reason to.

Isn't the skimmer the key to the Vodka/carbon source method? I thought bacteria in the water column created by the carbon source fed on the nitrates and phosphates and the skimmer then was the key to removing the final product leaving you with a nutrient poor system?

I do not use vodka and really just asking a question as I have been considering it.

It is a very bad idea to turn your skimmer off while dosing vodka. Not only will you not skim the bacteria but you will become oxygen depleted.

I would leave your skimmer on.

obviously you want to leave it on... however i have heard/read that when dosing vodka/sugar you should shut it off for the first 10-15 minutes (right when you dose) and then turn it back on... otherwise it will go nuts supposedly.

I've never done it though... so just relaying what i've read.

it wont go nuts... i dose 12mL/day on my 75... skimmer just keeps chugging along like nothing ever happened

and for anyone who wants to know... i have no clue why i have to dose so much in my tank for it to work, but i do... i think it has to do with being BB and having less substrate for bacteria to grow on but idk...

Yes the skimmer is a key piece of equiptment while carbon dosing.

im not sure... the rock is "old" and probably has some issues... but i honestly feel like carbon dosing might work less efficiently in BB setups since there is much less substrate for the bacteria to colonize (i have NO sand in my system)... just a theory i have though... also, i dont dose it all at once, i dose 4ml 3x/day

No this is not a problem w/ AA, sugar, vodka, vinegar, or other simple carbon molecules.

It's actually not a bad theory.
