I noticed this happening and took some photos. The side of a Xenia stalk can attach to something before the colony moves.
I have some algae problems so ignore this.

I have a stalk just like that, has moved from down towards the bottom of the tank all the way to the top.

Very cool but now it has attached to my crocea. Bad Xenia.

It's called creeping. And it will keep creeping until it takes over your tank. In my opinion, this coral, while cool at first, is invasive and in the right conditions can be more of a problem then aiptasia.

I have some Xenia I just put in my tank (small and on a frag plug) the largest stalk is moving off the plug onto the rock; I thought the other 2 smaller ones would follow. After reading this; there's a change the large will split off and the other two will stay on the plug?

This.
I made the mistake of letting it grow on my base rock. Lesson learned.
