Im having a problem with excessive evaporation. I have a 60 gal with 10 gal sump, 2X250 MH, and a table fan (10") keeping the water cool from the lights. I'm losing close to 1 gallon per day from the evaporation. The rapid evaporation started when I installed the MH lighting and the 10" fan, but without the fan, my temp skyrockets. The MH is approximately 6" above the water line.

Is anyone else experiencing this much evaporation?

Any suggestions?

sounds like normal evaporation to me.. I suggest an auto top off to maintain proper salenity levels. I lose a gallon a day with T5 and no fans.

whew, ok, i thought i had a major problem...R/O water starts to get expensive when you include water changes too.

Do you have your fan hooked up to a temp controller? While 1 gallon is normal, you could cut it down if you are only running the fan when the temps get too high. I have mine set up to turn on when the temps get above 83.

Yea, there isn't much you can. Increase heat from the MH + a fan is going to increase your evaporation rate.

im trying to decide whether to get an auto top off or temp controller. either way, i will get evaporation and need to top off. with a temp controller, i can save energy...and noise..and excessive evaportation...

so maybe getting both would be a good idea. i have a boat and my local boating store has flow switches and such..i wonder if those would work the same way?
