I just ordered two of these.

But I now realize... or maybe not... do they come with a glass cover? Are my bulbs going to explode without a glass cover?

Should I have gotten a pendant instead for ventilation?

They won't be seen ( behind a wall ) so that's why I got the reflector.

16-18 inches up since these cover a greater area.

I haven't had halides before so I just want to be sure. I don't want 10,000 pieces of glass in the tank

that might be a lil high...but the bulbs shouldnt brake...
make sure you clean the bulbs too with some tissue & alcohol incase you touch 'em

ok great.

I could always put a plexiglass cover over the tank too right? Or a glass one? I have a 90 gallon sump, a (to be) octopus 250 extreme skimmer etc.. so lots of oxygen there.

My thought would be harmful spectrums, like UV. The glass covering MH fixtures is often treated to filter harmful light spectrums. The bulb itself might be treated, but I wouldn't assume.

The nuances of this hobby are truly endless... :)

single ended bulbs outer glass shell will shield a good portion of the UV light so it is not really an issue to use them without a cover other than splashing.

Thanks jdieck

Last question may sound stupid but.... will any escaping UV light rays be harmful to humans? Will the metal halides cause cancer? lol

Although the outer shield reduces the UV significantly there is still concern of potential exposure for long periods of times so it is always prudent regardless of the level to insure the bulbs are not exposed in a way that can be seen from outside the canopy and there is no direct light from the bulb to the outside of the enclosure.

That makes sense.

Are the UV rays from metal halides "more" dangerous than rays from the sun or are the sun's rays more powerful?
