View Full Version : Purple Death Color Question
I'm sure you have seen this before. Purple Death has color faded and its not really purple but browned out. I have seen people selling them in this condition too.
My question is what causes the color to go from purple to this brown?

Very possible the amount of lighting they are getting (possibly too much), however it may also be the angle of viewing them. Mine look slightly browned, but still purple, if you look at them from the front of the tank at eye level. Change the angle of view to 45 degrees or more, and they are a rich purple.
I have mine at the bottom of a 2' deep tank (180), with 250 W, 10K metal halides, with actinic VHO supplement for a lighting comparison. What do you have them under, and what is the tank placement?

Yeah, probably too much light. They do like indirect lighting.

Its a mixture of lighting, placement of the polyp, angle of how your looking at it.
These are pics of the same polyps

I've never had PDs show purple through glass other than starfire. Mine are brown, until you look at them from top down, then they are as purple as could be.

From the whole time keeping PD's, they never liked too much light for me. I've kept them under PC's, cheap T5s, HO T5s (8bulbs) and now 250 14k Phoenix w/ 4 T5s.. I'm now getting the best purple out of them and they are somewhat shaded or getting indirect light.

Do they have a good growth rate under PC's?

Nope. I have the same set up... 20 long 2 65 watt PCs. I've had a polyp for over a two months with only one polyp of growth. They aren't growing in size quickly either.
