Thought it was about time i share a few pictures on RC.

Here's my very very small Juvenile Blueface Angel. He's been in quarantine for close to 6 weeks now. Currently feeding on Nori and NLS pellets. I have a schedule for feeding, about 10 pellets in the morning 5pm he get a sheet of nori and before i sleep he get 10 more pellets. I plan on leaving him there for maybe another 2-3 months or until i feel he can defend from the other 3 beast(Koran, Blue Angel and my Bluethroat trigger)

These pictures are of him at 2 weeks in QT. He's a little bigger now and has a little yellow at the top fins.

Very nice pics NuTom. You don't see near as many juvi blueface as juvie emps or korans, and I've always wondered why? Your little koran looks great too...like DPS I think they are highly undervalued as adults. Got any recent pics?

Damascus, your blueface looks great too. What are you keeping him with, etc.?

Sorry guys/girls wife just bought me a camera last Christmas but i really don't like it. I find that it takes very bad pictures compared to my old camera. Can't really get a good picture of the blueface. I'll try some more on the weekend.

Here's a picture of the Koran last week

Here's one of my first fish around 3.5 years old. Was sold to me as a female because he didn't have a bluethroat at the time of purchasing. I find him very aggressive. Has bite me a few times. Have a cool picture of him moving a piece of rock but i can't find it at the moment.

Its in QT right now. I had a major crash in my 90 right after I bought him. I almost left the hobby. Killed my entire tank. I spent a little more than I should had on him but its keeping me happy. I plan on a flame angel maybe a foxface, two black clowns and whatever else I can think of. I had a niger, humu humu, blue spotted puffer, when my tank crashed. I had just sold my female blue throat and went and bought the blueface. The next day all fish were dead. Before the tank police come in all fish were under 3 inches and I just bought a home and plan on a 240 or a 300 gallon build.

Here's an older pic of my juvi blueface. It's really hard to get a new pic. He hides all of the time & when he does venture out he's so fast I can't get a decent pic. It hasn't change at all in the 4 months I've had it. My favorite angel hince my user name.

If my math is right, mine took about 15 months to fully change from juvi colors to adult colors. Granted mine was pretty darn small when I got it.

Ok time for a couple more updated pictures.

He's about 9 weeks now. Yes i still have him in a QT and is still being fed 3 times a day but a little heavier now. Morning time gets about 15 pellets, when i get home from work he gets a 1" x 1" sheet of nori and before i go to sleep another 15 pellets.

This picture is kinda blurry but i just wanted to show how yellow his top fin are now and this was taken without flash.

Ok flask back on. Look at that black dot forming now.

I'll try & get an updated pic but if it's changed any I would be surprised.

I finally got a decent updated pic. I've had this fish since November 7th so it's been a little over 4 months now. I do notice a little bit of yellow starting to show more on it's top dorsal & it's pectoral fins are brighter yellow. But yours has changed more than mine in the little time you've had it. The tail on yours is starting to turn & the stripes are fading. Looks good!! Lets try & keep this thread updated w/ new pics so we can document ours changing together.

Yea the QT is super clean. I change his water every 3 days because i feed heavy.

LOL mine is only 1.5" maybe a tad bigger. This is the main reason i still have him in a QT. When i got him 9 weeks ago he was less then a inch. I do find that he's changing really really fast.

blface
Please do record your blueface changes here so we can see each others process. I think your blueface has very vivid colors compared to mine though and i noticed yours haven't gotten that dot yet. What are you currently feeding your? Did yours always have the yellow fins? or did it change to that?

blface
03/16/2009, 03:35 PM
Mine had the yellow fins & eye band when I bought it. But the fins are now alot more brighter yellow. I feed it mysis, spirulina brine, nls pellets, clams, nori, hikari marine algae, reef & fish #1 from h20, & spirulina formula. I do soak some of the food in garlic & zoe. His favorite is the mysis & nls pellets by far. The vivid colors maybe from the lighting in my display vs. the lighting in your qt. Lets get an updated pic in about 2 weeks.

03/21/2009, 06:52 PM
It's only been six days since the last pic I posted of my blueface but the new pic I took today surprised me w/ the changes in only 6 days. The tail is starting to become yellow & you can see the eyespot on the dorsal starting to show.

Yea I'm a little surprised at myself for selling him but my wife surprised me about 2 weeks ago with.... It was a early birthday present for me. Also I'm in the progress of purchasing my first home. Means I'll be very very busy. Hey bigger place means bigger tank for me LOL. I'm planned to get a 72" x 24" x 24" or a 72" x 24 x 32". Kinda liking the shorter tank for easy cleaning but who knows maybe i'll just get a 92" x 24" x 24" LOL.

Ok back to the juvenile blueface. I was only gonna sell it to someone very experienced at keeping saltwater fish and to my shock the person interested (Joe) has an amazing tank or should I said 2 tanks. He has won TOTM not once but twice for both tanks. See link here http://www.totm.aquariumpros.ca/TOTM/Sep2006.html So i feel that the blueface will find a great home.

Since Nutom bailed :D, I'll jump in to compare fish.

He is right around 3", but much thicker than when I first got him. At first, he was larger than the Emperor, but now he is slightly smaller. He has just started get some yellow, and has some small circles forming. He is a little shy, usually following the Emperor around, but at feeding time, he gets right in there.

Why you say that Damnpepshrimp? I have my almost adult blueface in with several triggers and a larger Imperator everyone ignores her.

DamnPepShrimp
06/28/2009, 08:05 PM
My tank is just way too aggressive. I have a 7" sohal, 5-6" passer angel, 5-6" french angel, 5-6" queen angel, 4" clown trigger, 5-6" purple tang, 5-6" redsea salfin, 7-8" klunzinger wrasse, 3" blochii tang, 36" brazilian dragon moray and had a 6" CXI emperor in QT, but it didn't take shipping to well (bag broke). So I will be getting another one in a month or so, but more likely 8-10". I just don't see a blueface fitting in, unless it was HUGE, but I'd rather get a large CXI emperor instead. When I upgrade I may get a blueface, or considering using the 210g as an angel reef, with possibly less aggressive angels like a scribbled, personifer, chrysurus, regal and blueface etc.

I know every fish is different, some people have aggressive setups with blueface angels, sometimes they are the aggressor. But in my setup, all my fish except my french and salfin are aggressive. My sohal and passer are both in time out and my wrasse is about to be! I am waiting for the new clown trigger and blochii tang to get settled. Then adding the passer and sohal back in. Then the last addition, the huge CXI emperor, and probably more time outs, haha.

barbianj

Here is my update, but I did not use the good camera so the pictures are grainy. My tank went through ich and copper recently, so both angels have a little HLLE. It started out as a bunch of little pin holes, but they all sort of merged together and are now a small patch that is nearly gone. You can see it on both fish near the vertical white stripe behind their eye.

The BF has grown thicker, as you can see in the second photo, but not much longer, still about 3". The Emperor on the other hand is much larger. They both eat aggressively, but the BF is just growing at a slower rate. His colors seem about the same as the last update.

Always loved the blueface but they are to much of a wuss for my FOWLR tank unfortunately.

I'll have to agree with scchase on this one, Pep. My BF is the second smallest fish in the tank, and he hangs with a pretty rough crowd. They are not as outgoing as an Emperor, but they are no pushover. There aren't any fish in my tank I would not consider aggressive. You just can't fit another fish in your tank!

Your blueline and clown tang will get bossy overtime, especially the trigger. The tang is hit or miss. I bought my sohal off someone else who broke down his FO tank and said it was a wuss. It was in a 75g! Well in a tank nearly 3x as big, its a bully! My fish are extremely aggressive, but they get along for the most part. The salfin and french sometimes get chased though. The clown trigger and blochii tang are currently in QT for another week or so, sohal is in the sump and passer in a holding tank. The emperor won't be added for atleast a month or more. I just got a 220g tank I am going to pick up this week too, maybe I'll get to setup my less aggressive FOWLR tank with a blueface :)

Guys, a little guidance here if you wouldn't mind.

My LFS has a real nice ~5" BF that I would really like to add to my 150g. I currently have a puffer and tusk in there, neither one any larger than the BF. There are some damsels left over from cycling but they can be removed.

I've not been much of an angel person over the years besides a handful of pygmys. I know my tank is a little small for a full size BF but other than that, how important is having a good quantity of LR? I have a few pieces of old base rock in there but not much. Will that be a problem for these larger angels?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Currently living in harmony with a Juvi Emperor, adult flame angel and semi adult Queen Angel. Only mentioned the angels, but have other fish in the tank as well.

It's been almost a month since I last updated this thread.
I see he has gotten almost all of the adult colors since the last pic.
He has definetly become bolder. Not to the point of bullying the other inhabitants but doesn't hide in his cave as much. He's always out hunting for food or protecting his cave. He has really started munching on the shrooms in the tank again. It's funny because he really only eats the green & orange ones. Almost to the point of them being nonexistant. The blue ones he hardly ever touches. Here's the new pic compared to the one from 8/28.

Here's a pic when I first added him to the DT back in
November of 08.
He was about 1 1/2" & now is about 4".

Here is my update. Just came out of Cupramine for the second time. Two weeks was not enough time the first go around. This time went much better. Still just a little HLLE, but it's healing quickly.

He is still the first to run for cover, but is becoming much more bold. Usually out most of the day, hides under rock ledges after eating. Able to eat the 3mm NLS pellets, and gets right in there when the triggers get their meat. Still a ways from adult colors, but getting thicker and more yellow.

I need to post an update on mine too. He's (she?) in that mid-way stage. How long do they usually take to complete the change? I've had him at least 3 months and only very small changes so far. Of course he's twice the thickness now so I guess that's a change for the better. What a pig! :)

If you look at the dates on my pics you'll see that mine took almost a year.

I guess no worries then. He's still my favorite fish. :)

Hey dampenshrimp. Unfortunately as soon as that queen and french grow a bit more you are likely to have 1 of them dead and the other tore up. I would seperate these 2 fish as they are very closely related and both mega bullies when they reach maturity. Good luck to you.

Just wanted to clarify/add a few things. I realize the french is a pom and the queen a hol but they are much too bold and mean to coexist as adults. A friend tried to keep them both in a 1250 and had to seperate them. I just noticed you also have a passer (another huge territorial bully as an adult), a sohol and a clown trigger all in a 210 gallon tank?. If I were you I would fill that empty tank and put the clown in there if you want to keep him (please read my "lost my clown trigger post"). If not I would decide which of the 2 angels you like the most and put one in the other tank and build around him. IMHO the sohol tang should be in a tank twice your size minimum. My 2 cents anyhow. Good luck to you.

Thought I would update this thread with a current picture
of my blueface. It has almost fully changed to adult colors.
Notice the lack of the eye spot on the dorsal. If you look at the
past pictures it was once there.

That's very interesting, I've only seen one other blueface lacking the black dot. Gorgeous fish BTW,I'm very tempted to get a juvi and watch it change.

I would guess around 5" or so. It hasn't grown very much except for the girth.

I didn't think that my BF had changed much until I saw my last picture posted here. It's really hard to get a good shot of him. When the camera comes out, he scoots.

Just thought I would update this thread. I've had my blueface for a little over two years now. Still thriving & growing. About 5-5 1/2" now & very fat. Notice the spot is missing on the dorsal completely now. Anybody else ever seen an adult missing the dorsal spot???

blface, curious on what do you feed your angels? i have one that is probably 4 yrs old, second owner, about 7" and still have the spot on its dorsal. i feed nls.
i thought age was the reason the spot disappears.

I think you've done an excellent job documenting your angel. Just a beauty of a blue face for sure. Thanks for sharing!

Here is my update, also with no spot. It's really hard to get a good non-flash photo of this guy. He's always out, just camera shy. The colors are very bright and bold in person.

I will note that he is much slower growing than the Emperor. Besides the Hawk, he's the smallest fish in the tank, but won't stand down to any others.

Wow very interesting documentation on these fish. I think you guys might be on to something. Maybe they dont develop the dorsal spot in captivity when acquired in there juvenile stage. I think this is one way of maybe determining how long and what stage a blueface was acquired. Very interesting none the less. Now thinking of acquring a juvenile as Im sure is very rewarding to see them change from juvenile to there adult transformation. Thanks
