View Full Version : Skimmer Recommendations?

I was wondering if anyone had a Marine Solutions skimmer recommendation for my 150 gallon lightly stocked mixed reef? As a replacement for my current 100 gallon sump/remote DSB, I've been setting up two 150 gallon stock tanks. I've got one stock tank set up with a MRC-2 beckett skimmer, 50 lbs. live rock and various macro algae. Water then flows into the second 150 gallon stock tank (unlit)where I have a 4-5" aragonite sand bed over a plenum and another 30 - 40 lbs of rock that is starting to grow various sponges. Right now, water is just circulating within the sump system and is being skimmer by the beckett skimmer.

When I finally connect my new sump system to the display, I'll probably have a water volume of about 350 gallons. I don't want to mess with the beckett skimmer anymore and was looking for alternative suggestions. Would I be better off going with a cone skimmer or would an MSX 250 or 300 work?

For your future system, if the stocking list is to remain the same (a mixed reef) then you'll do great with the MSX 250. If your plans are for more SPS in the system, then I would look at the MSX Cone 2S...the cone will do a great job keeping the nutrients "ultra low", which is what you want for an SPS dominant system. Softies, zoo's, shrooms, and some LPS want "dirtier" water (well, not dirty, just not "SPS clean"), so the MSX 250 will be a better fit for that type of system.

I just placed my order for the MSX-250. It seems to be the best bang for buck skimmer out there right now.
