View Full Version : Lost my Anthias to a maxijet mod!
A couple of days ago I noticed one of my Disbar Anthias was missing. I checked behind the tank incase it had jumped out but it seemed to have just completely dissapeared. It never left the side of the other Anthias how was happily swimming about so I was confused what could have happened to it. I was afraid I had an unknown predator in the tank. I was at school today and my wife text me that she found the fish. She was watching TV when she heard the powerhead clanking around. She looked and saw it spit something out. It was my Anthias! It must have been stuck to the backside of the pump somehow where we just didn't see it. Needless to say it was already dead, any my cleanup crew had dismantled it before I returned home. I was pretty bummed because I really liked that fish. I want to make sure this doesn't happen to any of my other fish so I need to wrap some kind of mesh or screen around the intake area of the pump. Anyone know where I can find some that will work? I was going to check home depot tomorrow but I don't want to get something as small as window screen because I'm pretty sure that will cut the flow alot.

IMO your Anthias died before ending up in the maxi mod. The shroud is usually pretty wide and the draw is not that great. A healthy fish would not be sucked up into it.
Perching fish have been known to get chopped when the maximods are on a wave timer and they perch inside of the shroud front opening.
I wouldn't bother covering the shroud with anything if it were me.

Dead fish always find a prop pump. IMO is that it was dead prior to the maximod.

I will have to agree with the 2 prior posts. I highly doubt a healthy anthias would get pulled into a maxi mod. Something happened before it ended up there...
My wife saw the fish the same day it dissapeared and said it looked fine. I would be very surprised if anything else happened to it. I saw it frequently swimming around the top of the tank near the maxijet. I'm still going to cover the intake, at least if something else happens I can be sure the Maxijet isn't to blame. It is possible that the pump was running backwards because I have seen it do that a few times in the past. If thats the case then I know it could pull a fish in. I've even seen my fish get stuck to my overflow teeth for a couple of seconds before pulling themselves off, and I know the Maxijet produces more suciton than my overflow.
