I am looking for the correct sized chiller for a 75g mixed reef, total water volume 90 gal. I have been keeping tanks for about 9 yrs but I have always run pendants so I never had to run a chiller. On the 75 I am running 2x250w mh with 4x110 vho, a QO4000 for a return, Gen-X pcx30 for a closed loop, ER skimmer w/Sedra 3500, and two Koralia 3s. During the summers the house temp will range from 75 to 78. I was looking at getting a used 1/10hp Arctica from a local reefer but now after doing some research I think it might be too small. There also might be a used 1/3 hp Current available locally for $100 more than the 1/10. In your experience do you think the 1/10 would be too small and is the 1/3 overkill? I am leaning toward the 1/3 but dropping that much $$ on one piece of equipment I want to make sure I am getting what will work.

I think you should get the 1/3 HP even at $100 more. It wont be on nearly as often as the 1/10 HP would be and will likely last longer as a result. The 1/10 HP will likely struggle to reduce temperature for a tank that size.

i put a 1/3 on my 70g. price was right and if i do an upgrade to a larger tank that's transferable equipment that i don't have to rebuy. working great for me.
